Im looking at this 2001 5.3 with 60 k for 800 dollars. This is it http://chevytruckworld.tenmagazines.com/fo....ten?id=164053L

What would i need besides this for it to work in my 97 k1500, i could only find pre vortec ls1 engine swaps and didnt know if there was a difference. If i buy this, besides the obvious wiring harness, ecm, e fans and tranny adapter plate what else would i need to make it work? Thanks guys, im seriously thinking about buying this and building it up before installing it. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Well the object is to build up the motor. Isnt the 5.3 a good base to do this? I was planning on installing a cam and maybe doing some head work with other mods. Is the 5.3 good to do this, or should i just wait for a ls1 or a 6.0? Thanks

What are your plans for the buildup? Do you plan to stroke it? Do you want big cubic inches? Do you want cast iron instead of light weight aluminum? The new 6.2L alum blocks are available and the matching L92 heads that outflow most all ported performance heads are only about $400 each. Couple that with a 4" stroke and performance rods and you've got one badass combination.

So Red, are you saying the way to go right now is to do the 6.2 L with the L92 heads? Would you put that new tranny behind it also? Does that 6.2 L fit into the OBS?

yes, it will fit. It's the same dimensions as the LSx engine. Transmissions, I'd do a 4L65E if you can find one reasonable.

The new 6.2L aluminum block will be so much lighter than a cast iron engine. Since weight reduces speed I would build as light of an engine as you can. You will need to tap the knock sensor locations to fit the Gen3 sensors and extend the cam sensor wires to pick up the signal on the front cover using an L92 cam gear, timing cover and pickup sensor(should be the same as the LS2). You'll also need the valley/lifter valley cover for the L92 to block off the displacement on demand ports in the block, or you can drill and tap the holes for pipe plugs. The block comes bored 4.06" so you'll have a very large displacement. Eagle makes a kit with the 4.06" pistons and you can stroke it big time, may be easy to clearance for a 4.10" stroke but it's simpler to drop in the 4.00" stroke. If you do the stroker, be sure to take an air motor and radius the bottoms of the cylinders where the piston skirts pull out of the bores. If you don't do that the piston skirts get all chewed and gouged on the sharp edges. Be sure the reluctor wheel on the crank you buy is the correct one for the PCM you plan on using. Older vehicles will not use the 52x reluctor.

Or you could go with this engine that is already assembled and ready to go. 6.2 is nice but you'd have to find all the pieces and it could get expensive. 6.2 is the way to go for anyone right now looking for the next big swap but the 5.3 isn't bad at all at 850 dollars!
