Thread: 6.0 in a 98Ecsb??

  1. #1
Ok so i just got done putting a pretty built small block with a decent cam and aluminum heads into my 56 chevy and now ive got the bug to build another motor. Im looking to do a motor swap into my 98 z71 Ecsb, At first i wanted to do the ls1 swap but then after some research i believe i want to go with a cammed and maybe Blown 6.0. I do have a few questions on what motor and tranny to run and how hard would the swap be into my truck. Im familar with motor swaps and have a large garage so space and tools are not that big of a deal but would my accesories and stuff work with a newer 6.0? and what other parts would i have to buy. I keep hearing lots of great things about the lq9 6.o but what year and model vehicle did it come out of and how much h/p is the bottom end capible of holding up to? And what about the lq4? what are the differances between the two? And i know that the 48loe is a very strong transmition but some people say it robs to much h.p, but how much h/p can the stock 4l8oe hold? and would my truck involve any modifications to swap one in.Or would i be better to build my 4l60e and put that behind the 6.0? Sorry for the long post guys but i just want to see what my options are and see what you guys have done and base my decisions on that.

    Thanks

hey dude welcome, sounds like u got plenty of money haha, wish i could say the same. the basic difference is that the LQ4 has lower compression than the LQ9 and has around 25 less horsepower. that would make it better if u plan on making it a FI engine. if goin N/A the LQ9 may be the better choice, the difference lies in the pistons and hardened rods. id go with a built 4l65e, as that is what the 6.0 is hooked up to in the SSS. idk any numbers on how much these r rated to handle or what the bottom end will hold either. ur gonna probably need new motor mounts too but thats a guess based on year differences. i wouldnt think the accesories would bolt up but idk redheartbeat would prob answer that 4 u.

No, accessories will not bolt up. Get the accessories from the donor vehicle. A/C usage will require that you notch the frame on the passenger side to use the factory A/C compressor. Custom hoses will be required for the a/c along with a block to hook it up. A high right side adapter is available from http://www.hotrodlane.cc to use a Sanden 508 compressor. I don't know if they make one for the truck engine accessories. One phone call is all it takes to get that one answered. You can run without a/c if you're in a climate that doesn't rival Hades for the daily high temp.

Haha ya i wish i had plenty of money, Im just 18 years old heading off to college so the money situation is going to get very tight very quickly haha and the shop is my fathers, He owns a trucking company so i just happen to steal one of the smaller bays from him to do my stuff in. I dont really need a/c and i think if i was going to do the motor swap i would get rid of it all together. Thanks for clearing up the differance between the lq4 and the lq9 i guess id just have to decide if i want to go with a F/I or not. My only other real big question is will the motor mounts lign up or am i going to have to custom make my own, if I have to custom make some i might change my plan a little bit and sell this truck and buy a newer rcsb with a 4.8 or something and swap a motor into that because i know the lq4's and 9's will bolt right in. This is probably going to be a daily driver so i need some reliable power, probably just a cam and a set of heads and maybe a little bit higher compression but nothing to radical. Well thanks for the replies and im hoping some more people can share some more things about the motor swap with me.

    Thanks

You'll need to fabricate motor mounts to use the stock transmission. On Ebay, there is a person that sells mounting plates made out of steel that can easily be modified to put the engine in. Buy the plates and then weld tabs onto it to tie the plates to the stock engine mounts. Any reason to sell a vehicle you're not exactly in love with justifies the move to a NBS truck.

Haha dont get me wrong, i love my truck but its a 98 and its got 151,000 on it. It runs like a champ and its super comefortable but im just getting sick of the ride with the cranked torsion bars and big tires. and i just love the power and handling that the NBS trucks have. I think im going to put her up for sale and maybe purchase a rcsb. Does anyone know what the diff in 1/4 time is between a NBS rcsb and a ecsb with the same mods? and how much more does the ex cab weigh?

    Thanks

The stock NBS truck with a 5.3L is about a full 2 seconds or more faster than the OBS truck with the 5.7L. There is a tremendous HP diff between the two engines.

? Tremendous HP difference? My ECSB Z71 with stock engine, just basic bolt ons and gears runs right with NBS trucks with my swampers, mid 15's N/A, went 14.66 when I had the Blower on it. My L31 Vortec is rated at 255HP and 330Ft/LBS, the newer engines (not counting 6.0) have about 30-40hP more, but lack a bit less torque in the early years. Don't get me wrong, the NBS trucks are far superior, part of the reason I'm swapping a gen III into my 98' (did an LS1 swap on my 87' Iroc before the 360ci race motor I built), but the L31 Vortec 5.7 isn't a slouch either. The early TBI ones and the Vortec 5.0 were though haha. the 96-98 L31's were decent though.

What blower did you run, that's a decent time for a big truck, was thinking of the intercooled ati procharger for my L31.

LOL you'll probably laugh but it was a Powerdyne BD-11A setup. one of the new kits running around 6-7psi, gibson headers, off-road y-pipe, no cats, flowmaster muffler with turn downs, bolt on PD blower kit with FMU (blah), MSD-6 offroad ignition with MSD coil, rebuilt 8.5 rear end with Detroit True-Trac, superior axles and superior 4.56 gears. Planning on another forced induction setup on it again soon
