    Question 1997 K1500 4x4 LS Conversion

    I have been searching and haven't been able to find a LSX conversion w/a 5.7. What I have currently is a 1997 K1500 4x4 w/a 4L60e tranny..

What I have bought is a 1998 LS1 from a 1998 Camaro w/a new set of bare 853 heads(non perimeter bolt), new set of valves and springs, LS6 Intake, ZO6 cam & lifter set. According to S & P all I will need is a few things to mate it to the 4L8-e tranny... I'll need the spacer adapter, oil/water pressure adapters and of course the motor mounts... Also best headers to buy to fit around everything and a X pipe as well...

BUT my big questions is they told me I would need to run my old pcm for the brakes and all that stuff and have 2nd pcm for the LS based engine and tranny stuff... Is there a PCM I can buy that can control it as one instead of running 2? Thanks for all the help fellas...

Do you have 4 wheel abs? If yes i would run both. Never did a 97 conversion but 3 5.7.L conversion in 92-3.trucks. what pcm and harness are you going to use?

I have read the S+P info and have read it on a lot of threads that you need to run 2 PCM's. I have helped with the LS1b PCM conversion into the 96-2000 GMT400 trucks for several years now. I have personally done about 8 PCM upgrades and supplied wiring info on hundreds of swaps. I have never encountered a 96-2000 GMT400 or S-Truck that needed both PCMs. I have run the 12200411 LS1b PCM in my 5.0L 98 truck for 6 years now and everything works fine.

Interesting. How do you keep the abs functional?

I have done harnesses and programs for several 96-up lsx swaps using only 1 computer. Not a problem at all. The only thing the abs module usually needs from the engine computer is the 128k speed output.

The ABS just needs the speed input signal from the PCM. I have never ever had a person say that their ABS did not function after the PCM swap. I have given out hundreds of wiring conversion instructions (Wiring Files) for replacing the Black PCM to the newer LS1b PCMs.

isn't it different when you have 4wheel ABS since you have to have wheelspeed feedback from the front rotors and the speedometer so that it knows how to proportion the braking plus detect individual tire lockup? I've been fortunate and have never had to mess with the big ugly ABS unit, mine have all been rear wheel ABS only.

No, The wheel speed sensors input to the ABS. The PCM receives its speed input from the trans and then sends info to the ABS unit and it does its thing.

I see, I thought that may be how it was but wasn't for sure. That's good to know should I ever tackle a 4wheel abs truck.

I too have used Jeff's schematics and only the one PCM is needed,no issue with ditching the black box on my 98.The only problem I have is with the fuel gauge running backwards,I'm thinking the previous owner screwed up the in tank sender when he replaced the fuel pump before I bought it,too busy and lazy to drop the tank just yet.
