    Issue with 4wd in 2005 1500

My friend has a 2005, 1500 CC Z71. When he puts the 4x4 selector buttons in 2hi truck will not go and shows service 4x4. When he puts it in auto it runs just fine. Could this be an issue with the encoder or just a transfer case issue. Truck has 150k and is bone stock. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

i have had to deal with this issue lots of times, usually it is a stuck encoder motor but the witch is also a common failure, have you scanned for any codes?

99-02 common problem is the switch, 03-05 common problem is position sensor inside encoder motor. The switch is easy for anyone, encoder sensor is harder but you can do it Mark. Pull the front driveshaft (four 11 mm bolts, cut off ring on rear joint that holds dust boot, pry out at front, slide forward and out) then unplug the encoder above the transfer case. You have three 15mm bolts that hold it to the T/C...take them out, they will be hard to turn due to loc-tite. You can then pull the encoder off and to the bench. There is a plastic gasket between the two. Keep it to reuse.

Flip the encoder motor side up, you'll see two 15 torx and two (outboard) 20 torx. Remove them and pull the inboard side of the cover off the motor. You'll see the sensor under the big gear. Take it all apart taking care that there are small (thin) thrust washers inside between moving parts. Replace the sensor then line up the tabs for reassembly....also make sure and line up the mark on the gear with the mark on the aluminum encoder (bottom/outboard) case half before putting the other half back on....reverse procedure to install.

HTH and call me if you need help.

That assumes it needs an encoder like it sounds. Auto doesn't affect it because AUTO is 2WD until a rear wheel slips and is a 0-100% type deal.....not a range in the T/C like 2HI, 4HI, 4LO.
