I found a set of Edelbrock shorties I like, but are shorties really worth the upgrade, I will wait as long as I have to to save up for a good set, I checked out the ASM headers like Allen suggested, but they are a bit out of my pricerange.

Any opinions on some good long tubes that are a reasonable price ($550 or less)?

First, I still have factory headers, as I'm saving my $$ for long tubes. But Bro, on them shortys, don't do it. I may stir up a hornets nest here, but the gospel according to 99.9% of what i've researched is that shorty headers on our trucks are basically heavy paper weights. There may be a small HP gain, but the $$/HP ratio is really bad.

Another fact is that street-use long tubes for our trucks are generally not cheap, and the options are somewhat limited. Here's a breakdown from the fact finding I've done. Some have AIR and EGR configurations that I don't show here (I don't have to worry it):

    Arizona Speed and Marine (ASM)
    • about $750 to $780
    • Includes ceramic coating
    • Good reviews
    • Requires welding on flanges
    • Fits 2WD and 4WD
    • OEM Cat compatible
    • Not sure on CARB certification
    The Other Guys (TOG)
    • about $750
    • Ceramic coating extra ($150 at TByrne)
    • Direct bolt on and OEM cat compatible
    • Have seen articles talking about minor fitment issues, but mostly on f-body cars
    • Not sure about 4WD fitment issues
    • 1/2" flanges
    • CARB certified
    • Good reputation
    SuperMaxx by Dynatech
    • about $1050 for headers only, $1400 for complete headers plus cats
    • Direct bolt on
    • Ceramic coating extra and I think you'd have to get it done yourself
    • Good reviews
    • Not sure on CARB certified, but probably okay
    • Fits 2WD and 4WD
    PaceSetter (see http://www.texas-speed.com/)
    • about $385 to $400
    • Ceramic coating included
    • Have heard of possible 4WD fitment issues
    • NOT OEM cat compatible, but Non-CARB cat y-pipe available ($325)
    • NOT direct bolt on, requires welding
    • Flexible applications
    • Pretty new product
    Hooker
    • They have a new long tube, but from what I can tell the applications are all pre-1999
Well, that's about it. Anyone know of a manufacturer I'm missing? Please append to this list if so.

At this point I'm leaning towards TOG, but still have a few more $$ to stash away before that happens.

    Good luck.

I’ve heard the same thing, our exhaust manifolds are pretty good so you don’t gain a lot in the lower and mid ranges with shortys.
