    4l60e failing?

    Hey guys,

So I just did the 6.0 swap from the 4.8 in my 2003 Silverado. Now I know the tranny is going out (It has 147k on it!!!) but it is different from what I have read about them. The 1-2 shift is weak and slips at times. The 2-3 shift is perfectly fine (odd?). The 3-4 shift slips and often takes 3 or 4 tries before it clicks into 4th. And the entire 4th gear is screwed (RPMs bounce up and down and the truck lurches consistently). I am trying to get it to survive until June, when I will have the money and time to rebuild it (with a Monster rebuild kit).

    Any info? Thanks a bunch.

Sounds like the 2nd gear apply band is worn out or your pistons are leaking. Did you install a Corvette servo? Try that before rebuilding the trans.

Will installing a corvette servo in a tranny that old hurt it in any way? I don't want it to screw the tranny up further.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is the 1/2 accumulator piston and where is it?

I would get a gasket/ seal kit and replace all teflons rings with the 2nd and 4th servos on the side cover, easy to do...

But most likely the band is worn and needs replaced, I have heard of people installing a longer pin to push on that 2-4 band helping it hold for longer amounts of time til a rebuild.

Bare minimun I would leave it in 3rd, that way you are no longer applying 4th and it'll get you til june

Nothing you can do is going to prevent the tranny from self destructing. The harm has already been done. There are pieces of clutch material, 2-4 band and who knows what else flowing through your tranny right now. All it takes is just one seal to get cut by the debris and its party over! 2nd gear and 4th gear both use the "2-4 band". Yours is cooking and thats why you have all the slippage going to 2nd gear and 4th is almost done. Just like they said before....stop using 4th (OD) if you want to limp this tranny any extended amount of time. You got lucky....the 4l60e usually last around 115k-125k installed in a truck application. Start saving your money....its just a matter of time now.

Remove and replace the tranny yourself to save usually around $400-$500 in labor costs. Take it to a rebuilder and let them have at it when you can. If you want it to really gives you your moneys worth over the next rebuild have the installer put a 2-4 kevlar band, hi enery clutch kit, corvette servo is a absolute must for a truck as much as it is a car, the beast sunshell and all updates that your tranny needs for the valve body. It will live a long productive life and be alot better than a factory style build.

When preparing to run a freshly rebuilt 700r4/4l60 it is an absolute must to make sure that the tranny is completely full to the full mark of fluid! These models of transmission are very picky about fluid level. You will cook a brand new tranny before the truck even hits the road if you run it at idle low on fluid.

    Good luck!

    you're lucky...
when my 700r4 died, I lost 3rd, then 2nd, and barely made it into the garage.
Lasted about 30k behind a hopped up 350HO.
You've probably already thought about swapping in an 80E, but I'll mention it for the helluvit because it's cheaper than a built 60E (or a non-built replacement for that matter). Albeit more expensive than rebuilding it yourself, but at the end of the day you still have a 60E behind a six liter.
I found an '03 80E for cheap (I think it was like 3 or 4 hundred), but I'm a Craigslist whore.
A little wire work with the harness and a reflash, but hey it's an 80E.!!
