Hey all:
It's been several months since I last posted, but I am now in the thick of getting my 94 RCLB Z-71 running on LSx power. I was holding out to see if my buddy would get the LS1 out of his Camaro in a timely manner, and he hasn't. So, the 4.8L is going in. It's a bone stock <10k mile motor. It looks like this truck will be my DD for a while (budget cuts losing company vehicle), so dead nuts reliable is the goal.
I have a road trip planned to haul my bike out to NY for the 4th of July, so the truck is going together quickly.
I did this swap once before, on a 2WD 93 4.3/4L60E. This one is a little different.
Differences:
1) The original trans on the Z71 was rebuilt right before I got the truck, and the truck was running a Dart-head 350. So, instead of using an LS trans, I am running the original case with the flexplate adapter. Since the bell is shorter than the LS-specific 4L60E's, and I didn't want to move the trans forward, the engine had to go back from the old setup. This required new mount adapters, which I built, painted and installed over the weekend.
2) The engine will be getting the old R4 AC compressor. I'll be building brackets for that after the engine is up and running.
3)The tranny cooler ports are in a slightly different location in relation to the bell, so I will need to modify both the fittings, and the routing. No biggie, I will have some new hydraulic lines made up if I can't just cut and re-swage different fititngs on the existing hoses.
4) When I built the last truck, I was on a different time crunch (baby on the way), so when I finished it, I left things like the oil pressure gauge and coolant temp gauge on the cluster unhooked. This is getting fixed. I am currently debating how I will do it. I would like to whittle the stock sender down to M12 for the head, but I am also looking at other options, like the water pump mod and a few other tricks I have in my head. The wiring was never as clean as I would have liked it, and I have been meaning to clean it up.... for 4 years now. This will be getting done as well. The oil pressure is pretty straight forward, I found a 1/8 NPT-M16 adapter, and will drop that into the original Oilpressure port behind the intake.
Currently the motor is sitting in the truck, and bolted to the trans. I'm pretty happy with the mount brackets, but I have some ideas I might try later.
