Steering Wheel Play

I have a pretty good amount of play in my steering wheel, and I was wondering if there was a way for me to remove this without having to replace anything???

I am not sure but there is a allen and jam nut on the steering box to take up the slack on the worm gear. Do little turns to tighten about a 1/4 turn at a time took almost all the slack out of the z71 2002 tahoe. It took about a 1/2 turn.

Im sure nathan will jump in here but on some chevy models there is a shaft that wears out.

This is a good way to take slack out of the steering gear. Don't go to far or you'll get steering memory (poor return) and accelerated wear.

The shaft makes noise but doesn't cause play. In addition to the steering gear adjustment, make sure the inner and outer tie rods and idler and pitman arms are not worn. Check the ball joints and hubs too.

Sounds like the problem I had. Turns out it was the intermediate shaft in the steering. Apparently it's common with these trucks.
