man i wish i could help, but im going through the same thing you are. i really dont want to spend $650 on an engine harness so im going to try to make the harness stand alone.

You can dissect the harness fairly easy. You just need to know what plugs/connectors need to stay in the harness to make sure your motor wont throw a code after you re-tune the ECM. Your tuner will need to know all the details, so they can tune accordingly. A wiring diagram will show every pin number and color on the ECM. Just remove one by one untill your done. Re-loom the harnes, plug it all back together and your done. I have done this one time with my last build. I had a 2000 LS1 that I put into a full tube chassis, custom offroad truck. I had the mail order tune done by "Wait 4 Me Performance" in Texas for $75.00 a couple of years ago. Go for it, and good luck!!

..........And I will be going through this again in the next few months. I have a 5.3 from an '08 Suburban going into a '72 Blazer. I will do the whole thing again myself just because I am a cheap ass, and cant spend the $700 for someone alse to do it. You can have the wiring done in a day doing it your self and taking your time. Just search for the "Minumum" connectors needed in the harness. I want to say:
    knock sensors
    o2 sensors
    cam position sensor
    throttle position sensor
    injectors
    coil packs
    Intake air sensor

Thaere might be more, but off the top of my head, at 6am, that all I can think of.

    what about water temp sensor?

Does the ECU use water temp or air temp for cold weather fuel correction?

I dont remember having that, but I could be wrong. I think the air intake sensor will tell the ECM what it needs to in order for the correct amount of air/fuel mixture. I used all seperate sensors and controls for the water temp, oil pressure, electric fan relays, fuel pump, etc. I wanted the absolute minimum in the wiring harness.

Yes, the o2 sensors tell the ECM how the fuel is burning, rich or lean.
