What A Pain!!

Will I started the motor swap on my wife's Yukon XL today(2000 5.3 TO 2008 5.3) and I got to say what a pain. I'm trying to keep the power steering (pump won't come off bracket without pulling the pulley) and A/C intact in the truck. Got the harness apart and pulling it with the motor. I spent three and half hours trying to get the converter bolts out and couldn't do it. I called a friend that does tranny work and he loaned me a 16" chisel bit for my air hammer, says it's the only way. Will within 30 mins. all three are off, YES! Then started removing the tranny to motor bolts the first 6 no problem. The top three well after an hour I called it quits for the night. I spent all day and into the night a little and the motor ant out yet. I did chase tools for about two hours but still. I've pulled motor out of a lot of older cars but this is the first newer car and needless to say I have not impressed myself. LOL Back at it tomorrow.

Yeah those verter bolts can be a little tough. Once you get rolling though it should be a piece of cake. It wasnt too bad for me, just took time to find stuff. tools parts etc. Except I didnt have a 5.3 to start with lol, I had a 4.3

top three bolts, take the intake off and attack from the top or remove crossmember and let trans hang, get a very long extension to get the top bolts. Converter bolts are easy, 3/8 ratchet in the hole where the starter was. Roll the crank around until the bolt is just below the starter mount and then put the ratchet to it. I put a deep socket on the handle end with an extension for more leverage.

the whole accessory assembly can be unbolted from the block and set to the side leaving everything still hooked to it. To remove the a/c you have to lift the engine up until the bolts are accessible, then remove the four bolts holding the compresser onto the bracket.

The swap will be worth it, like a new truck!

Be sure to take that intake manifold off when installing the engine, it'll it make it a lot easier and you won't crack it.
Might want to get the trans out of the way too, lining it up can be a pita.
We typically just remove the trans when we pull the engine, makes it a lot easier and only takes a few more minutes, well worth it, IMO.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up pulling the tranny and exhaust and it did make it easier. I had to pull the cross member under the oil pan off also. The pan would get caught on it and not let the motor move forward.

HarleyDave, thanks the mini bike chopper is something I bought a long time ago when I had more money than sense. LOL It is fun to ride and hauls butt even with me on it.

Lsx10, The wagon is my daily driver it's a 1980 Chevy Malibu and not finished yet. I wanted something new but old to drive and just couldn't resist it. It's got a Ford 9" 4:10s been mini tubed with 18x10s on the back 18x8 up front. Four wheel discs and a close ratio rack up front. The power is what you might like. I ordered a 2007 LS2 crate motor from Chevy a couple years ago. Then before I in stalled it I put L92 heads a comp 595/598 cam on it. I did go with a 850 crab because it's what I know how to tune. It runs really great and now that our local track has reopened I need to get out and find out just how good. LOL





06 4.8, Hey Chad Robby told me you where disappointed with the 2/10s your truck picked up (you thought more). Don't be, I know it takes a lot more to go quicker than some think. Two tenths is good in my book with the horsepower to dollar spent. I'll post pics with an edit.
