    Newbie with T-case/tranny issues...

Alrighty guys...I will get down to it...

Driving down the road at 60mph. No noise whatsoever, the engine revs a bit then nothing, no gears at all, just like someone had bumped the truck into N. Engine running no howl, no noise at all.

If I put it into Park while Engine is running, it makes a rachetting noise. If I start the truck in Park, NO rachetting noise.

Makes no difference if in 2H or 4, still no gears...

No fluid on the ground, and tranny fluid is up and clean, not burnt. Haven't checked the T-case fluid yet (tonight, I just got the truck home last night).

Rear end and drive shaft are good.

    Electronic 4wd (2H 4H 4L buttons). 2003 GMC 2500HD, 6.0L Automatic (not the allison) 4x4.

This tidbit may be unrelated, but prior to this, the 4wd wouldn't engage unless you came to a stop first. That happened after the Mrs. decided to get it stuck and go for a little off road...

Thinking it is the T-case. Is there anything simple to check to make sure it isn't the electronic portion first before I drop the T-case out???

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated... Thanks guys

If it had an electrical problem with the encoder (shift motor) on the transfer case you'd probably have a "SERVICE 4WD" light.

    Sounds like a transfer case.

The noise you here is probably the parking pawl in the trans because the trans is trying to spin the broken transfer case....not much different than putting a 2WD in park while the wheels are turning. When you start it in park, the pawl is holding.

It's not hard to remove. Drain it 1st to reduce the mess. Pretty much splits in half after you get the speed sensors pulled out. Also gotta pull the rubber plug and loosen a snap ring.

Ok, guys, I feel retarded right now. I have replaced several transmissions, but never on a 4x4 and never had to deal with a transfer case. Is there a simple way to take the transfer case off with out taking the transmission out?

Also, I couldn't see an inspection plate, unless I need to remove the actuator to inspect it?

The tag on the transfer case says 263 hd gm

Chock the wheels well and safely raise it on jack stands under the frame.

Pull the drive shafts, unhook the wiring, unbolt the 6 transfer case to trans nuts and the transfer case to frame mount, then slide it rearward until the joke and studs are disengaged.

Got the t-case out...nothing out of the ordinary that I can see. However, the output shaft on the transmission turns by hand when in park. Also, it doesn't turn when the truck is in gear.....

It looks like a snap ring and remove...is it that easy or am I hoping to much...

you have to tear down the whole transmission to get the output shaft out.
