what would be the benefit on going to the larger engine? how possible is it to upgrade the 4x4 parts to make it them hold up to the power? that would be a built engine not just stock, possibly 500 hp?

Man, about the best suggestion I could come up with if you're going with that much HP would be to go to a 4L80e tranny and tranfer case from a 3/4 - 1 ton 4wd. The transfer case has larger parts on the inside. You could buy a late model 4x4 drivetrain and put the whole thing in there. You'll have to figure out the electronic shift for the xfer case.

4150 u-joints and yokes will alleviate headaches in the driveshafts. put a good quality posi in the rear end and see if you can break it! The 8.5/8.6" rear ends are very strong, stronger than most guys would believe. If you have the G80 installed, replace it with a real LSD/posi before it falls apart on you.

is it possible to not lock the rear end fully yet still have it durable? i didnt want to have problems turning from one wheel scuffing along.

Get you an Eaton posi or Auburn Tru-Trac and you will not have any problems. These will still allow the rear wheels to turn at different speeds when turning.

Yeah, you don't want to buy a spool rear end. I like the Auburn.
