You can actually leave the shaft in. Just don't make the mistake of pushing the 4X4 button. What I did was unplug the front differential actuator on my truck.

I haven't. But it looks like an interesting cam. Should perform well down low.

Make sure your friends are famaliar with the meshing pattern of the gm gears they are just enough different than other makes to cause problems. Even the pre 2000 setup was the same as dodge ford or anyone else for that matter. I don't know if any aftermarket companies make 4.56 ring and pinion sets that will work with your stock carrier. I don know that GM doesn't offer them. You may have to change the carrier and gears whitch will make set up a bit easier but the cost way higher. Just think all that work and money just to undo what the big tires did. Maybe its worth it who knows but be careful that rear diff won't take much tire spinning with those size tires especially if it has a locker!

ya i hear ya, i dont get why it acts so much diff tho, because i got a stock tire and rim still and my ne ones bairly weight more like 4 pounds i think it was? there a crazy light set up my ex's brother found for me. but i mean there about the same size just bigger diameter, as far as the gears im gunna talk to my buddies uncle who has a shop in town and see if he'll do it. if not ill figure sumthin out.

Isn't it more likely that he has 3.42's since they were the most common gears in nbs 1/2 tons? Followed by 3.73's and in dead last 4.10's. I'm not saying people are giving bad recommendations, but I would find out what your current gears are first before you commit to anything. 3.42 to 4.56 is a big ass jump, esp with only 33's and a stock cam.

    Just an idea : )

His truck is a Z71, that package included 3.73s or 4.10s only.
