doesnt sounds like excessive amounts of work......I still want to put some thought into something like:

bear with me, I don't have much knowledge in these fields....any reasons why I wouldnt be able to find a crate motor that bolts right in?
working on getting something less....lets say....compact and attention grabbing
If you stuff a 502 in there you'll be carb'd and get piss poor gas milage. Sure it is cool to see a big block...if you want one just scoop up a C20 truck that has a 454 in it to begin with. But then you'll have a TH-400 (great trans, NO OD) and bad rear end gears. Just not something driveable on a daily basis.Originally posted by mikecordell@Oct 11 2003, 04:57 PM

An LT1/4 or LS1 both bolted up to a 4L60E or 4L80E would be the best bet for power, performance, and economy.

ya true, you could also go with a built 350, and buy a fuel injection setup , something like holley or edelbrock offer, I was gonna go that way , but after i added up all the parts and stuff, the complete new ls1 was a lot less.

That 502 is nice and I don't have that kind of HP with this setup, but I don't have $5400 in my whole swap and I get better than 22 MPG.

economy isnt my BIGGEST concern, longevity is, the truck will probably never see more than a 10 mile commute at the worst and never travel more than 200 miles at a time, we're talking daily driver.....and as far as performance goes, I may only be 19, but I've gotten my wild driving out of my system...trust me on that, I drive the speed limit and baby my car and my wife's car around town. I mainly want a truck that will last another 500,000 miles, get 15-20mpg highway (what my Focus got at its worst) and have minimal problems.....and with the possibility of towing trailers someday....with that in mind, what do you recommend?? The towing is the main reason I leaned towards the big block crate motors more than the LT1 or LS1

I don't think a 502 will give you good gas mileage,
Something that would be a great setup for you truck then , would be one of those "stump puller 383's", they offer tons of torque down low and mid range, offer great reliability and will still have the power to pull trailers.
just a thoght,
allen

a good 6.0 looks like it would fit the bill. as for being a daily driver that you'd want to last, i wouldnt go with a crate motor, being i'd want a motor thats as tame as it came from the factory, not coming from the factory with all kinds of big #'s hp/tq wise. if its modded or a crate motor, i wouldnt imagine it lasting 500K miles like you want, and they wont get even 10mpg probably vs the 6.0 gettin between 15-20mpg. its a common up to date motor with parts(aftermarket and factory) readliy available.
