Early models are 99-2000, they'll have iron heads. There's a few compression calculators on the web, you'll need the combustion chamber cc, I don't know 317's off the top of my head but someone here will and hopefully chimes in. Then you need the compressed thickness of the head gaskets and how many cc's the dish in the piston adds or takes away and it will give you a pretty close estimate at your compression. If it was my build for a dd I'd go for a compression ratio in between 9.5:1 and 10:1, something a little bigger than the LS6 cam, around the 220 duration mark maybe, a nice set of dual springs like the Patriot Extremes and the fuel system to match. Try to keep it around 12 pounds and it will live a long life stomping most anything on the road.
