A converter wouldn't effect your highway use but it would help your bottom end by stalling the motor at a higher point enabling it to get into its power range easier, might be that extra little punch your looking for and probably the cheapiest of all three mentioned. Put that together with a tune and maybe a underdrive pulley, electric fan. All tghese things would be booth benefical too low end power and fuel mileage.

same problem with my 5.3 2wd escalade got worse when i put 22''s on it. are you on stock wheels? i definitely agree with everybody's suggestions as they the same things i would do myself. whats your driving style? I think a higher stall t/c such as the tb t/c would be perfect but isn't that only going to be noticeable if your putting it the floor all the time? i think a gear change would yield ''all the time better results'' instead of just when your puttin her to the wood. also i dont think anybody has mentioned longtube headers yet i believe they would be awesome with a nelson tune.
    5.3 2wd upgrades: Nelson tune, stainless lt's, magnaflow, e-fans, msd's, cai.

well, when i drive it, i act like it's a vette or something, i know it's not though. just my driving style, and i don't wanna change the gears cause i don't wanna suffer greatly at highway speeds. may end up getting a tune, and a tbtc. would probably be my best bet. anyone have any idea what these 2 together can add as far as hp?

i'm on stock wheels and tire size. like i said, i drive pretty heavy, kinda always in a hurry, don't know why i bitch about mileage, the way i drive makes it suck anyway, and i believe the tc would be good, because once it's on the freeway, the kickdown is pretty good already

Ok first of all you gotta loosen up on the mpg to get extra hp's. The tc will not give you any hp.. actually take away hp if you dyno'd it.

The max hp a tune on a stock vehicle can give is about average 20rwhp + or -. Seen some get about 30 so it depends.

Gears are gonna put more torque to the ground.

E-fans are not gonna be noticeable off the line. The mechanical fan has a clutch on it that is made to slip. So when you first stomp it it slips then catches up with your motor. Stock 05 e-fans pull about 20 amps.. so this puts alternator under heavier load.

And for a cam that gives you low end below 2500rpm... stock cam is about as good as you can get. Sorry. Here is one to look at tho.. it should pick it up some because the intake valve opens up super early. COMP Cams® - Cam Details

Long tubes are gonna really shine in mid rpms and as you go upstairs.

So i'd say SPRAY IT! jk!

i agree with having to loosen up on the mpg's to gain, but i'm not trying to make my wife's grocery getter run 12's either. just breathe a little life into her until i get my own 5.3 powered chevy. i do however, wanna make it a little more fun to drive, and surpirise a few people also. As far as re-gearing, i would have to do it twice, being a 4x4. Not really interested. Very interested to see what a nelson tune can do for me. and maybe like tank said, a 2600 stall, cause that's when it really starts getting into the power anyway. Until any of that happens, thank you all for the advice and the help for me as a beginner, and just to throw it in your face, i live in houston, and went to the OReilly spring nationals today, and it was a blaaaaaast. made my tahoe feel horrible on the drive home. Kinda hard to wanna spin my tires after watching Ashley Force run 300 miles an hour.

try working a track day & riding along with someone in expert class & then driving home in your truck they wouldn't let on the track
00 FRC - just top end, exhaust, and a hot-air intake
