    you must have a G80 from your description, replace ASAP before it grenades and takes the carrier, gears and transmission with it on its way out.

    well super.. anyone have an idea for a new gear set and rear end i should buy. i only have 300 bucks left over from selling my other truck, i would like something strong that can handle burnouts, off roading, and extra power from a cam and supercharger. thanks for all the help.

    well this is a problem, what can i do to maybe avoid this rear end blowing up. and can someone send me some links for new rear gear sets, that are cheaper and good brands, how hard would an install be for new a rear end. i have done minor rear diff work on a muscle car, but it has been a long time.

    Ha, typical noises from a higher mileage G80. It could be other things, but do what Gavin said and look on the lid of the glovebox for the RPO codes and see if you see G80. You can also look to see what your gear ratio is--

    GU5 = 3.23
    GU6 = 3.42
    GT4 = 3.73
    GT5 = 4.10

    $300 will get you another used G80, but I would try to pony up for the Detroit Truetrac. They can be had for $400. I don't see the need for new gears unless the pinion looks like it has chunks or cracks in it, so just replace the carrier. In some applications, you can get away with using the factory shims, but I would look at getting a new cover gasket.

    It will be cheaper to just buy the tru trac and be done with it.

    Do you think you can give me a run through of the install, How hard is it going to be, and will i still be able to roast both tires? What are the advantages of a tru trac rear end?
