Thread: 4l80 conversion or 4l65e from flt

1. #1
Here are the thought processes or questions.

5.3 whipple charged z71. 80e conversion or 4l65 I only want an FLT tranny there are no others that I would consider.

The conversion kit can be seen at the link below

http://speed-eng.com/store/product_info.ph...roducts_id=7610

the 65 at flt is below

Is the speed eng 4l80 by FLT? For the money which one is gonna be better and live longer.

I also thought seriously about changing from part time 4 wheel drive to all the time awd by using a transfer case from an gmc c3 truck. Would I have to have any other parts besides the transfer case to install this. Also would it act like my truck does now on pavement in 4wd?
I eventually want to upgrade to a big motor and want the trans to be able to handle at least 500 rwhp.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Also I tow a 17' enclosed trailer at least 2 times a weak so reliability is important.
Thanks
Jake

I think you will be fine with the FLT. They rate the lvl 5 trans at 500-550hp. Give Chuck a call at FLT and talk it over with him. The FLT tranny is excellent.

If you are under 600 lb-ft of torque I would stick with the 65e, because of the better 1st & 2nd ratios; those 80e's eat a lot of hp.

nice vid......I thought you were only supposed to lay rubber in 1st with an auto trans....something about it trying to shift while there is resistance against the drive-line instead of JUST the tires sliping......or something...ha ha....I just remember my pops saying something like that when I was in highschool......maybe thats just one of those old man to dumb teenager things.......

any truth to that with th 4l60's VS an older trans with no electronics?

I dont mean to thread jack here....just askin cause that might wear out that 1-2 shift like a sprag in a 400...

Once I got rid if the crappy whipple and went turbo and awd the trans could not hold it. If you never plan to go more than 500hp you might be ok. I have surpassed that and the trans did really good for several years. If I had went 4l80 it would still be alive and my wife would be happier.
