no just the intake. only the ls style engines require head removal. just pull valve covers. loosen rocker arms and remove pushrods. pull intake and distributor off and you should see the lifters in the valley. pretty straight forward. be sure to drain the coolant first. gary

97 and newer vettes, 98 newer f-bodys and 99 p/u new body style are LS style motors. anything 95 and older is a genI motor i believe. so all LS motors use similar valve covers other than the early vettes and f-bodys around 97-98 i think.

so basically i should be able too say if it has square centerbolt valve covers yur good u dont have to pull the heads?but if you have the rounded c/b v/c your gonna have to pull the heads?im just alittle confused.was theyre square c/bolt v/c and our style, rounded valve covers in say 97/98 ?sorry,it just turned into somethiong harder than i thiought it would.he called me and said my t/a needs lifters do i need to take off the heads?to change lifters.i thought he had the same motor basically as us but 5.7 ,because ive seen so called 5.7s that look like our gen 3 ls motors.i guess that the year would of helped ,lol.i just assumed it was the same lsbased motor as mine bassically, although im getting it could be an lt if its b4/98.sorryt for the rambling but try this if its an ls motor than hell have to pull the heads ,but if its a lt[wich is b4 98?]motor u dont.obviously.so even on our gen 3 ls motors you have to pull the heads to change the lifters?boy i just dont wanna believve it.When i did my tear down i had heads offf so the question didnt arise,so im not picturing it.

if the engine is 98 or older you dont have to pull the heads. there are differences in the 98 and older motors but this repair is pretty much the same from 55-98.

"90's Camaro" could have Gen I, Gen II, or Gen III.

Up to 92 is Gen I TPI (if 5.7), 93-97 is Gen II LT1 (same procedure really, pull intake and push rods).....98-99 LS1 that requires head removal.

Cant you tell real quickly what kind of motor by looking at the exhaust headers? LS' all have evenly spaced ports, while the LT1 had the siamesed center ports. Unless of course there are some trick heads on there. Or the plastic intake, or ign coils (unless relocated).......
