I've always had the idea of getting a vette or Camaro SS style intake and making a functional ram air, Just never had the time or money to do it.

I cant see where it would get that much less hot air if I moved it a foot and a half to the left or right..

You'll pick up heat anywhere under the hood. You get air through the passenger side fender so if you 90 it and remove the plastic plenum from the core supportt it will get cool air while moving. There's no good place under the hood except for the factory box that kept cool air sucking in all of the time but took HP away.

So other than it sucking hot air it should be fine?

You don't want the filter directly in front of the fans though. You might get into some knock retard so I wouldn't keep it there forever if you're looking for efficiency.

I had my air filter just like yours but lower(LS1/LS6 intake) and when it was on the dyno the air temp was in the 130's.

When I put a K&N 8.1 truck elbow on it the filter sits where the storage box was and I gained 30RWHP!

    Temporarily, it's ok.

However, during traffic and city driving, your power loss will be significant.

The pcm has a table that modifies timing based on iat, on some trucks, 15degs of timing gets pulled, that's more than half the applied timing at wot!
    Timing makes power.
