Thread: DYNO Tuning

1. #1
I am looking to get my truck dyno tuned buy a local shop. I have a 99 ecsb with the 5.3. I was wondering what the main advantages of going with an 01-02 PCM are over a 99? Or can they make up the difference while getting a custom tune.
99 excab, Nelson Tune, k&n FIPKII, pacesetter long tubes, No Cats, Dual Magnaflows with turndowns,
1/4: 15.66@88.1 Before Nelson, headers, and de-cating
Also 69 camaro SS 350 4speed, 13.81@103.6, Ls1 swap planned

Faster processsor, more agressive base tune, ability to setup for electric fans...

Will the person doing the tuning be able to compensate for the slower processor. What advantages does a faster processor provide? Will a custom tune be able to overcome the less agressive base tune. It seems to me that If you know what the base parameters are on an 01 PCM you could be able to compensate for it.
Foregive me for asking any dumb questions I am just trying to get some info. PCM tuning is like another language for me.

Also how mutch torque management should I have removed for a stock trany with 115000 miles on the ticker?

The 2001-2002 is a better PCM all around. Don't remove any TM from a transmission with that many miles unless you just want a reason to rebuild it. The tuner will do the best tune they can with what you have. Any PCM will work but the general consensus(sp?) is that the 411 computer improves performance all around in pre-2001 vehicles.

Thanks for the info. In your opinion would it be better to get my 99 PCM tuned on the dyno ar get a 02 PCM tuned from Nelson performance?

A live tune is always best. Find a tuner that can get you a 01-02 PCM and then live tune it. Nelson can send you a very good mail order tune or you can drive to SanAntonio for a live tune and it will be worth the drive. If you can't do the drive you may find a local person that could do it but I still would take the drive and have it done live.

if the tuner has access to custom OS's, then their is no need for a new pcm.

What does OS stand for? Also If I get a 02 pcm from the salvage yard will it make my truck run well enough to get it to the shop or will it not start at all?

Drive it to the shop with the stock PCM, that way you don't have any issues.

OS= Operating System, usually. The base program in the PCM. It's kind of like windows, mac or linux software but for OBDII PCMs.

Tell me if i got this right 99'-00' pcm hardware is not as good as a 01'-02' pcm B/C of processor power right?
So even with a custom OS in a 99'-00' you would still be better off with a 01'-02' PCM with a custom OS? I think anyways, Im trying to figure this stuff out as well
