Factory original fuel tank fuel pump konking out on me...Have researched & read about their short lifespan from the factory, due to defective wire connections at the pump, that eventually make the pumps go bad. Should I replace it with simply a new stock replacement...such as a Carter brand...or is there a better quality alternative? Or.....should I forget the factory in-tank set-up, and go with an in-line aftermarket pump mounted to the frame rail? Thanks for any insight you might have.

Yeah, I ran into that myself in my 97 Astro van. The GM design on the drop-in-tank fuel pump/level sender assembly is prone to shorting out. I was going to replace only the pump with a Walbro in the assembly until I saw the connectors were fried. Due to the fried connectors I didn't have much of a choice but to buy a redesigned model from Orielly's at about $200 for the assembly. I think the brand was TexAir.

Crap, I forgot it was $279.99 for the pump. I usually remember when I get raped for a part.

Put the factory pump back in it. Put ACDelco part # EP381 it's $91.00 and it's just the pump, hoses and O-rings. This is what I did when mine went out. Be careful with the fuel level sensor, you can damage the reostat. and then you'll have to buy the whole assembly.

Update: Just for shits & grins, I replaced the factory fuel pump relay in the power center, in the engine compartment. Guess what? It worked! Have been using the truck for a couple days now. So far, so good. Wonder if the wires on the fuel pump though, that corrode & are causing the pumps to eventually go bad, are also causing the relay to fail? Hmmmm.....

1996 was the first year for the pick-up trucks. Tahoes, Suburbans, etc,. I believe were a couple years later. The complete 1999 line had high pressure efi engines/fuel pumps.
