hi fellow swapers! I have found a possible donor motor for my conversion and want to know how/what to check when I go look at this motor. It is a 6.0L w/trans and 4wd transfercase. What do I need to check so I dont get screwed????

thanks

I used this site to answer my questions about switching my tail shaft

Check condition of the fluids first. Get it running in the donor vehicle first if possible. Is this a core for rebuild or are you running it as-is? How much mileage is on it? If you are using it as-is I would for sure get a read off the plugs and if possible perform a leakdown check (I'm a big fan of leakdown checks). Need more info on what your plan is...

leakdown is good but it only checks the cylinder in one location and the condition of the valves. It does nothing to tell you if the rods are bad. Never buy a used engine without a warranty. Some places will give you a warranty good from the day of install, not purchase, my favorite! I wouldn't buy an engine that doesn't come with at least a 30 day warranty.

here is what the seller wrote back. I am guessing it is a LQ9. He is asking $1700
its a gm motor, from an 02 Cadillac escalade. my friend was hit in the side, (T boned) and got paid off by insurance, and bought it truck from them. so he was able to keep it.
it has only 60k miles, on it. complete with Trans. 4l60e with round gray plug.
yes I do have a motor lift to pick it up and put it in you truck. feel free to ask any more if you like. but this thing is tip top shape and will go fast. so you were first email on list so I go in order as received for fairness. I'm not a step over any one kind of guy. I like to go first to last in my email.
[/b]

should I pass since there is no warranty??
I feel that even if there are some problems, it will get me all the parts to get mock-up done (exhaust, steering are two issues that I can address)and I could swap long blocks at a later date(read:when I get the $&#036. I am excited to move forward and dont want to make a bad purchase.

where do the heads have markings???

thanks for your help.

Sounds like a good deal since its not a salvage yard transaction. 60K is just breaking it in. The heads should have 317 embossed on the ends and there should be 6.0 embossed in the back of the block behind the flywheel on the passenger side. You won't see it if the transmission is still bolted up to it though. The 317 number on the head will tell you it's a 6L engine but won't tell if it's a LQ9 or not. As far as I know the Escalades all got LQ9 engines but I could easily be wrong.

I'm sure the Escalade has the 5.3L too.

I used Transdap plates. I will check exact numbers when I get home. Shoved mine ahead aprox 1.25. The
right '02 F-body 5.7 exhaust manifold would not fit, used one for a 5.3L. 2wd here and auto (4L60E, and the driveline was too short. Had a new one built.
