yeah, bad switches, wiring or module itself. My cruise module has over 200k and my 92 had over 300k on it without missing a hitch.

Ok I have verified the switch is working. Its getting a signal from the vss. My question is I cant seem to find which wire is suppose to be ground for the cruise module. Every wire seems to have voltage at one point or another. The only one I think could be the ground is a black with white stripe. Never mind found a pretty good diagram in pdf I have if anyone needs it.

black and white wire is ground. You can try taking the cover off the cruise unit and see if you have corrosion on any of the contacts but it sounds like your box may be dead. Salvage yard units are cheap replacements but be sure you get a warranty that its not a dead unit.

Store the pdf file up on photobucket or here for future reference if you would.

    Pdf

How do I store the pdf file here? I found that for some reason the ground was getting voltage in it dont know how but it was. I just cut it and grounded under the hood now it works great.

Sounds like what is called "open circuit voltage". Since the component that this wire is supposed to ground is powered you get a test light to light connected to ground and this wire. Ground that wire and retest. If I'm wrong (doubtful) the worst thing that will happen is a blown fuse.

    Been 4+ yrs w/o cruise

I was so happy to get running and thought I'd get back to cruise and other items but haven't over the past 4+ years. Now I also would like to get the cruise control working. I had the info and marked some wires but now... can't find it. Anyhow I will send redheartbeat a message or if soemone could post up the diagrams referenced early in this thread it would be very helpfull.
    Thanks

1989 trucks have the VSS signal going to the speedometer first, then the signal is "conditioned" and sent to ABS, cruise, and also to original PCM. Once you get your speedo working everything else should work also. Since you have an auto trans with 40 tooth reluctor wheel VSS you can simply run the VSS wires to the speedometer, they should be purple and yellow and they are twisted together. To send the signal from VSS to new ECM just splice into the purple and yellow wire anywhere it is convenient.

To calibrate speedo on 88-90 trucks you will have to do the cluster calibration.

I just went through all this on my truck, but EVERYTHING works now.

    Check these out:

Basically, back in the day before DRACs and VSSBs they had the speedo "settings" for tire and gear inside the cluster. The way to change them is not hard once you know how.

I still have the parts in my garage, I'll dig around tommorrow and see if I can find the part numbers.

The second link has a great way to replace factory "clip" with a dipswitch.
