    1993 to 2003 brake conversion

I apologize if this isn't the correct section for this, but there is no area that really has anything to do with brakes. Being that this is a conversion to an ls truck style brake system i figured this section was ok.

Hey everyone, so I was working on a 2003 yukon today and couldnt help but notice the nice aluminum dual piston calipers that come on the front and then noticed how remarkably similar the steering knuckle is to my 1993 yukon. I have been wanting to upgrade my pathetically undersized brakes for a while since i tow a lot. So after a couple minutes of staring and thinking I thought to myself, "why can't i swap all of my brake parts out with parts from a 2003?" I am wondering if anyone else has tried this. I am thinking that I can replace my knuckles with ones from a 2003 and then all the brake parts. Same goes for the rear. I want to replace my drum brakes with backing plates/calipers from the 2003. I havent had the opportunity to sit two knuckles side by side and measure the tie rod/ball joint holes but it looks the same. The only difference i see is that the tie rod mounts upside down, not a big deal. I think the camber offset on the upper/lower bj holes are going to be the same because the 2003 takes the same cv axles that my truck takes. Let me know what you guys think of this idea. Basically I am looking to convert my truck to 4 wheel disc brakes with dual-piston cals and drilled/slotted rotors for about $1200. Far less expensive than just a FRONT kit from someone else.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Come on, I can't be the only one looking to stop my truck quickly after spending thousands to make it fast.

I don't know if the knuckle works or not, but if it does don't bother with the 2003 Yukon brakes on the front. Use 2005 Silverado calipers and rotors. They are bigger.

the only difference is the caliper. brake rotors, pads, and calipers are the same for a 2003 yukon and a 2005 silverado 1500. there is a different caliper option for the silv if its 9900lb gvwr. And in any case i still have my stock 16in wheels and have no desire to put bigger ones on. I like that i can get a brand new set of 31" bfg all terrains for $275 for my puny 16in wheels

I agree. These older trucks brakes suck, especially with larger tires and a 6L

I understand if you don't want to go up to a 17" or bigger wheel, but you are wrong about only the caliper being different. The rotor and pads are different as well. The rotor is larger diameter and the pads are larger to fit.

i looked up the rotors, they are the same. Obviously the parts for the 10klb truck are going to be different, but i have a 2 door yukon, 4600lb. The stock brake parts on a silverado ARE the same on a yukon, if you really want ill post the part numbers to prove it. The difference in braking area is around a whopping 9.7 square inches. For those of you who need a visual aid, that's a little more than the area of a business card. Now divide that by two for both sides of the rotor. Not a significant enough difference for me to justify bigger wheels.
