Thread: painting interior accents?

    yeah, gonna let it sit over night. I was told to sand the paint, im just afraid of going down to the primer....
    what # of sand paper should I use to sand the paint? This is the first time I do something like this by the way (if you hadnt noticed)

    Gonna do the plastic arount the radio tomorrow. I sprayed the first 2 coats of primer after the adhesion promoter, then sanded it down smooth and re primed it. Ill continue to sand/prime tomorrow as well. I really wanna see how that first piece is gonna come out.

    when i wet sanded my stuff i used 1000 grit just to be safe

    ok, ill use 1000.... what if it hits the primer?
    what am i looking for when I sand the paint itself? same amount of smoothness as when I sanded the primer?

    Just smooth it out, like take out the orange peel look... im not a paint expert im just going off experience... i have painted the interior parts in 3 of my trucks so im just going by what i learned and have been told... and use alot of clear... i did

    Do not sand the basecoat. That is very unnecessary. The orangepeel comes from the clear anyway, not the basecoat. I don't even know what the point of sanding the base coat is. Go ahead and apply about 3 coats of clear. Let that dry and wet sand with 2000 and buff it out, and it will have no orangle peel and look awesome. In my 10 years of paint the only time I have EVER sanded the base coat is when I did the rust effect. Which you arent doing here.

    since ive let it sit over night, should i wash it with soap/water to remove dust that may have built up on it?
    After seeing it dry, i did notice very little pores come up. More than likely from the spots i may have overlooked while sanding. Its very very minor though

    No. Just use a tack rag if you have one to get the dust off. Dont wash the fresh basecoat.

    ok so no sanding the basecoat..... tack rag, ill have to buy some. I sprayed the last coat of paint last night at about 8pm. How long is good to wait between coats of the paint? also, how long should I wait after the last coat of paint to spray on the clearcoat? and how many coats will be good? 3-4? and how long between coats of clear? sorry bout all the questions, just wanna get this right

    Correct. Do not sand the basecoat it is unnecessary. Rule of thumb for PPG paint is basecoat can sit 24 hours at 70* maximum to clear it. for every 15 degrees hotter the maximum clear coat time is divided in half. so at 85* you only have 12 hours to apply clear. I always wait about 10 minutes after my last coat of base to clear it. and about 5 minutes in between coats of clear. Remember I am talking about PPG here, dupicolor in a can Im sure is different. But to be on the safe side if you clear 10 minutes after your apply the base and about 5 minutes between each coat of clear you will be fine. 4 coats should do it.
