If you have access to a plasma torch, use it. It does not concentrate heat in a large area so you'll be fine.

My laser cutter is still on layaway but I do have a plasma cutter but was concerned about the heat. I agree I dont think it will be in one place long enough to matter. I heard it was a nono so I thought i would ask... How bout welding in the c notch? I heard that was a no no also? Any thoughts?

From what I understand you do NOT want to use a plasma
I used a grinder with a cut off wheel quick and clean

Mine is welded in and it is fine. The only problem with it is that the guy who had it welded the vertical part of the frame but not the top or bottom section. The welding itself didn't cause any problem.

from my experience, use a grinder with a cutoff wheel, i use dewalt wheels myself, very quick and straight cuts, or a "Sawsall" with metal cutting blade, always dewalt, if you buy the cheaper blades they wont last. also on the welding note, welding in the notch isnt a bad idea, just dont let it heat up too much and warp, welded cnotches on plenty of trucks and never had any issues, including my daily, a slammed hardbody. when i do my notch im going to weld it in

Plas is the way to go if you have access to one
