    shift kit question

I installed a trans go hd 2 in sept. Everything seemed fine. The other nite I went to race a 5 speed truck from a 40 punch. (he swore he could get me. got him by three easy) So I pulled it down to 2nd and mashed it. Downshifted great but jumped into third before I shifted it. Its still untuned. I thought with the kit i could hold any gear till any rpm? Am i wrong?

    60e or 80e?

I've noticed that my 80e, under certain throttle conditions and speeds can override my gear command.

It usually works but for example under very slow acceleration it can leap from 1 to 2 with the shifter in 1st.

There are a lot of things in the tuning that don't like shift kits. TM occurs too late, adaptive shift tires to slow everything down then registers slip when you get heavy on the pedal the next time and the trans gets grabby with its gears.

I still need to get mine tuned, hopefully that will help. Otherwise I've had really good luck with the kit and with the gearcommand feature.

If you hold it in low can you hit the rev limiter? That's a pretty sure way to tell if its at least capeable of holding gears.

Mine had me install a plug in the manual valve passage but if you have a 60e it might be different.

How much better does it shift after the shift kit?

Maybe it sensed it was operating outside of parameters and entered some kind of limp mode.

Hopefully someone who has actually played with trans tables and values will chime in, I can only guess.

Its all in your tune. Even if manually selected and if the PCM meets either the throttle input, rpm, or speed, it will still shift up or down.

Try putting it into 2nd. It SHOULD start in second and STAY in second gear until you reach those parameters. If you mash the gas while in 2nd, it will downshift. If you go past the rpm or speed limits, it will shift to 3rd, but then will shift back down to second once it is back within the parameters within your tune.

Not necessarily, I can smack the rev limiter in all three low gears, it just sits in that gear and bounces off.

The kit puts a physical plug in the passage of the manual valve that is supposed to give it propriety over the solenoids.

It just seems that every now and again the computer manages to still override it. It is in the tune though, many aftermarket controllers can actually cause a bind up in 1st on the 80e with these kits.

The computer commands one gear, the manual valve commands another and you get a trans break, or a broken trans.

I wonder, are there different shift tables for the different column shifter positions?

I think there must be because when the shifter is placed in 2nd the trans starts in 2nd gear.

If this is so, then perhaps setting the upshift points to the next gears for say 1st, so high that even without the kit it would remain in that gear.

The same for 2nd position, still able downshift to 1st but unable to upshift to third until, say 100 rpms above the rev limiter.

That way, the computer would work with the gearcommand, be on board with it.

That is all very hypothetical of course, dependent on their actually being a shift table for each column position.

It is a fun feature though, you get to play with the gears like its a manual and then put it in drive and have all automatic upshifts.

Shifts nice and firm but rushes through gears and converter locks at forty. A tune should straighten that out.

And +1 about it being in the tune....

Yup, Yup. IN THE TUNE. Anyway, it sounds like your tune is set towards mpg efficiency. I personally like it (mine locks up at 34mph--thank you 4.10 gears!!!!!). But yes, you can change ALL of it in the tune.
