Unplug the sender and put the key on. If the gauge goes to zero I would replace the sender to start, its $55 from napa. If that doesen't work you need to start checking the wiring

if it stays at 80 with the key off needs a cluster, do the gauge sweep first but id put money on it

i would not drive it, "better safe than sorry", I had a sending unit go bad going down the road and the gauge bounced back and fourth from 0 to 80 and it knocked like crazy. i would hate to see you lose a motor because of a $25 part

I had the same problem but did not worry about it but after a while every thing started to read wrong I called chevy and they replaced the whole cluster for free I drove my truck for 2 months with only the gas gauge working and I had no problems
