I just remembered, after rotating the cam a couple turns you can slide a 5/16"? rod down a hole on both sides of the cam that will hold the lifter up and ensure they won't fall. I read that somewhere but haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. That makes cam changes so much easier. I believe it was Popular HotRodding magazine where I read that.

Instead of that $$$$$ lifter tool? I was going to run pen magnets at the local VatoZone.

I need to order the gaskets, timing chain, and hell I think that's about it here. Well a crank bolt too.

hey guys, while down at Nickens last Friday dropping off my engine, there just happend to be a stock LQ9 on the engine dyno. The engine wasn't making any power, how's 245hp sound, lol?
The customer decided to get a tune, and we eventually made 441HP out of a cammed LQ9 engine. I'm not sure what cam that was, I'll find out, but I thought that was very, very impressive!

Just shows how much these 6.0's have in them.

btw, 402 forged/14psi ugly truck coming soon!

    later,

I've swapped many cams and I've never used a cam tool or magnets, I guess I'm just lucky.
Just be sure all the lifters stay up. To test, I simply turn the cam, push all the rods back down, then turn it again, do this several times and see if any of the push rods don't stay up.

    good luck,

    allen

Alright, so my question, at this point is, should I swap my cam on my 5.3, or just forget that and save my monet for a 6.0 swap? What kind of gains over stock are possible with a smooth idling cam on a 5.3?

I'll be able to tell you how well my 5.3 responds to the LS6 cam in a little over a week.

Sounds great. How much did the cam cost, and where did you get it?

I bought it off ebay for $150, I caught this auction in the beginning with a very low buy it now price! You might find one for under $300, try www.gmpartsdirect.com, thats where I bought my springs from, they might have one cheaper.

My brother has a LQ9 in a 2003 reg cab 4x4 silverado. He is definately interested in the cam and tune swap. He has HP Tuners that he has been playing with but 441 horsepower made his eyes light up with glee. How much torque was the engine making and how streetable is this package? Also how would that cam work if he decided to supercharge or turbo the truck later on? Thanks!
