    usable?

I pulled the water pump, and the impeller had spun free of shaft that couples it to the gear, it was sliding freely back and forth in the housing. the blades are chewed up and it ground down the inside of the housing a bit.

is this acceptable to use or do i need a housing? also what could cause this to happen, the pump only has 11k miles on it.

get a new pump, they're not too expensive.

i was kinda thinking since its on the pickup side of it, it wouldn't make any difference other then it has more area to suck water from. its probably another $80 for the housing, i would really like to reuse this unless its a big deal.

just looked a pic of what the housing should look like, didn't realize how far off mine was. il definitely get a new one. i mean if it was ground down just a little i would run it but i probably lost an 1/8"...

on a side note, the truck ran surprisingly cool for having absolutely no coolant flow, i mean i made a few 5ish mile trips to the parts store without exceeding 230*. and somehow it didn't even make any noise, that absolutely amazes me. the thing is pretty messed up i would expect some nasty grinding noises.

I hate DMax water pumps. Have fun with the 32mm 12-point balancer bolt that tightens to 260 ft/lbs.

yea, everyone says its a bitch. mine came right off, the last guy that replaced the pump didn't use locktite and must not have torqued it. there were also some other finger loose bolts, must have taken it to a crappy shop. other then that it was a fairly simple job. i imagine torquing it shouldn't be too bad with a cheater pipe.

    btw, its a 36mm.

32mm was off the top of my head and I have broken more than three 1/2" breaker bars just loosening the bolt that should have no loc-tite. A cheater pipe won't work with a proper torque wrench and you'll need the proper tool to lock the flexplate or come up with a shadetree way to hold the engine for the balancer bolt. It sucks. Trying to make flat rate money on any diesel is that's why I hate them...and the fact they cost so much.

yea i was pretty disappointed at how easy mine was. man i had the perfect stopper made up out of a grinded down 1/2" socket extension, i cut a piece of wood to cover the radiator in case i slipped, i was stretching, getting ready for something serious, then it flopped right free... lol.

and yea, i can tell you hate working on diesels lol, i guess when you do it for a living you have a different mindset. for me it didn't seem too bad at all.

The good thing is that at least you have a slip fit balancer as all you have to overcome is the bolt, no puller needed.

yea i was very relieved when i read it was slip fit. probably would've had the motivation to do it if it was press fit. me and 6.0vortecchevy had a hell of a time removing and reinstalling his balancer for the cam swap. didnt want to do that again.
