    Tranny filter change...

Okay so typical newb question I'm sure. I was planning on changing my transmission filter on my 03 Sierra 1500 and upon further inspection realized the shift cable and mount hang in the way. Never screwed with one of these so could anyone debrief me on what and how to remove that? I was thinking it might be possilbe to slide the tranny pan away from it a bit and pull it out without touching it but before I go breaking the bolts loose and get stuck I just wanted to be sure. She's my only way of goin.

Also, I was told at O'reilly's that the replacement fill capacity after dropping the pan would be like 4.7 quarts. That sound right?

You can unbolt that bracket by removing the two 13mm bolts holding it on, or you may be able to remove one bolt and swing it out of the way, or you could bend it out of the way and bend it back when your done.

The bolts are 40 torx head. The best way is to remove the bolts as bending the bracket doesn't usually allow enough room and ummm.....bends your bracket. Also, prying can cause the shift cable's plastic to break in approximately 1 out of 7 tries. Make sure you use a pick to clean out anything in the bolt head to prevent stripping.

Ooops....most 03's have a deep pan and hold about 5.5.

Sorry bout that, my 99 had 13mm hex bolts. Before you mess with the bracket at all you should go ahead and pop/unhook the cable.

GasGuzzler - your actually the one that told another person that some people remove the cable and bend the bracket, i don't think it's the best way, but i'm sure it does work

Despite possibly having said that in the past, Nathans latest recommendation is the best way to do it - unbolt the torx head bolts.

Nathan mentioned bending it on the 28th (4 days ago), and it is by no means the best or even a good way, but if for some reason the bracket can't be unbolted, this method will probably work (which is why i mentioned it here).

My comment wasn't directed to you. I was just clarifying the best way to do it.

Haahaha are you talking about THIS POST OF MINE?

I said it's best to remove the bracket but some bend it. Usually when I write "but some people like to...." I'm saying an alternate method I don't like.

You're right, on some 4WD's the bolts are tough to get to and sometimes the torx head strips. The only way to do it bend the bracket....but it kinda sucks that way.
