+1 on the tune...that will get the most bang for the buck right away. Definitely +1 on getting it from Nelson Performance! Do your "idiot friends" drive stock imports? Slightly modded? You may be surprised how many you quiet down with just a tune...

K&N Intake,Flomaster Dump,3.73,g80
Comming soon :Cam ,Nelson Tune, LT Headers and the works.
LT headers can be found for about 150 bucks used
intakes for about 100,
efans for about 200,
80mm throttlebodies are availible from summit for like 160,
custom header back exhaust from mesa mufflers is like 400-600
Custom tune at neilsens 375
I mean isn't that gonna be similar?
BBK Performance 1709 - BBK Power-Plus Series Throttle Bodies - summitracing.com
Throttle bodys must have gone up since I looked last I have a old issue summit that says 179 for the same part.
If he gets headers, he needs stainless or coated given his location - unless he wants to buy new ones on a couple of years. They don't sell used for $150. Between headers and the rest of the exhaust and install, he could easily spend $600 or more.
I'm running mid 12 second quarter miles on a stock throttle body. Others have run much faster on a stock throttle body. He doesn't need, nor would he really benefit from an 80mm throttle body enough to justify buying one.
E-fans free up HP - but the gains aren't very noticeable.
Just giving my opinion based on a couple years of doing this. There's more than one way to spend $1000.00 though. I'm not saying my suggestion is the only way.
My fans helped the AC performance much more than the engine's performance.
Most are slightly modded, annoying muffler, cold air intake, one of them actually is a vw corrado with a turbo that he talks up way too much. I'm looking into splurging and getting a heads/cam combo from texas-speed.com then getting a tune after i install everything. And I was also wondering if I throw a 160 thermostat on there now will i have any benefit? I appreciate everyone voicing their opinion and further giving me ides thanks.

Keep the stock t-stat. These engines run good as is.
