    im pretty sure he just painted the backside, so the light doesnt shine through

    it is by use of a satin black vinyl overlay. I am working on a full gauge cover now, that does the same effect, only a little nicer.

    That method would only work at night, and even then you would notice the stuff you're trying to get rid of slightley. It would still be painted white on the top of the overlay. That's the part you really need to get rid of, and make it look seemless in the process.
