the only problem with painting crome is that the paint doesnt get a really good chemical adhesion to the surface so it will look good for a while but once it gets a scratch or nick its gonna start to flake. but i guess you got to work with what you got. got luck. gary

what about painting my chrome bumper...what is involved besides scuffing and spraying it?

I used to do body work and sand or b blasting will do wonders for prep, as long as you can get below the crome shell and get good primer down . I recomend powder coatings on the bumper, pricey but more resistant to 100mph grasshoppers

I own a body shop and do things like this all the time. The "chrome on the grille" is not actual chrome. It is a plastic shell. All you have to do is get some 320-400 grit sand paper and scuff it up really well. After that do your normal stuff of using wax and grease remover and tacking it off.
--Now here is the important part, PPG makes a product called Advanced Plastic Adhesion Promoter. Before you lay down and base coat or sealer you must spray the Adhesion Promoter on there. There is no need to prime it or anything. Follow those steps and you have a perfect product in the end. Its not going to flake off or peel. Same goes for the chrome on the mirrors.

As for painting the front bumper. And I doubt you will have any luck getting paint to stick to that for a really long time.

    powder coat

You CAN paint on crome, but weigh wether its worth it or not. Once agian if you have access to a blaster i suggest blasting and cleaning off the plating, but you dont have to. good primer, powder coat, then bake. It will look good, and ive never seen paint come off, here is a faq link.

Btw I am powdercoating the crome part of my bumper black, so you are not alone. I think it would look better.
Also consider anodizing, it makes the chrome shine through, and if you do it right lasts forever.

I'm a painter at a body shop. i would scuff it with a gray scuff pad. you have to be careful how to prep it. cause its plastic it might leave to deep of scratches if you use anything coarser. i also use the ppg plastic adhesion promoter. theres no reason to prime it unless you scratch the plastic to deep. if you are using sand paper don't go with anything coarser than 600. wet sanding paper will work bettter than dry sanding it

it can be painted. scuff pad, wipe it down with prep, ppg adhesion promoter and paint away. as far as the bumper - dont do it. i agree sandblasting will help no doubt, but painting a front bumper that was originally chrome, 9 times out of ten its a short term cosmetic gain.
