Measure the clutches and if they'll not consistantly the same thickness, replace them all. If the frictions show any heat discoloration replace them too. The manual tells you what the stack height should be. Soak the clutches in trans fluid for a couple hours before measuring the stack height. I had to order a new retainer plate from GM for my last transmission I built, the stack height was off by about .030".

Well... couldn't bolt things up yesterday b/c I needed to replace the pump to case gasket, and separater gaskets. Got those earlier today, but not working on it today. Wife & I went out to dinner, and about to catch a movie shortly. Maybe I'll get up early tomorrow, and finish up... but, it'll have to wait til after I get oil changed in new car.

Man... I hope this works after I've spent all this time on it. If not, no worries. I'll pull it back out again to try again, but it would be awesome to say I rebuilt my OWN trans. LOL

There is a lot of satisfaction that comes with a successful transmission buildup. I've thought I had troubles with my latest build but it's always been something else unrelated to the transmission. Don't give up, it's not rocket science.

Nah, it's not rocket science. But I've talked to a few people (GM Service Techs) I talk to here and there make it out to be. I just find that it "can" be tedious the first time around. As far as the tear-down, you don't need any "special" tools to do so... unless you want to make a note of your input shaft's end play. I've always been told "the tighter, the better", but not tighter than the specified 0.015" spec from ATSG. Picks & long-nosed pliers would be nice too.

Not that a shiny new coat of paint means it'll work flawlessly, but I was disgusted at the job that was done when it was sold to me. Why would you paint over dirt & grime. blah! At least it held up for 3000 miles in stock form under my engine's punishment. Anyway... I would bolt it back in, but I've gotta buy an HD2 kit & Sonnax servo. Guess I'll buy that this week sometime. Sorry for the not-so-perfect pics. I used my cell phone... I forgot I had charged the batteries on the digicam.

Hmm... found this leaned against the back door of my house. Funny thing is, I was home, and didn't even get a ring-a-ding-ding of the doorbell. It's a day late, but it's okay. Wish I had time to get to work right now, but wifey's at work, parents haven't come in town yet, and I'm at home with step-son (10 yr), nephew (8 yr, I think), son (3 yr), and baby boy (5 mos). I'd take 'em outside with me, but they like to run around too much for me to be concentrated on my project. Anyhow... lookie wut I got!

Cool parts! Those should help the dependability of the transmission. I can relate to surprise pachages, our UPS driver does the same thing.

Almost done with it. All that's left is drilling out the separator plate, replacing the boost valve (w/ alum spacer, regulator & bumper springs), and installing the wire spacer in the EPC screen to kept it from collapsing. Apparently, that can collapse causing burned clutches & bands.

Had to make a pit stop b/c Mother Nature said so. Now, my 5-month old is squirming around in the bed. I'm anticipating him getting up from his 3.5 hr nap. I know if I go back out and try to finish up the trans, he'll start whining for someone to come get him. So, I'll call it a day, and get up early tomorrow morning to finish up. Wife took nephew and two older sons to see Spiderman 3. Wish I had someone to watch the baby. Can you imagine how anxious I am to get that trans in the truck, and beat the SNOT outta it?

Just a bit of advice you might want to repaint your case flat black. Just in case you have a leak or 2 you can find it easier with a non glossy color.

sprayed... I thought about that. have three cans of flat black paint in the storage room. i'll think about that between now and sometime next week.

vince... I noticed that capri sun snuck in the shot. ha ha ha.

I finished the reassembly this morning, but stopped since it was "Mother's Day". Guess I'll get it in the truck sometime next week. I'll be in Houston until Tuesday. Can't wait til I can ease out of my subdivision to a nice, quiet, clear, straight road to floor the go-pedal. Hopefully, I'll be smiling instead of cursing. Will bring the DV-cam for in-cab vids of the test drive. Hope it's a success.
