if i go the truck ls1 i will just use the 4.8 i have and then latter get a 408 block to replace the 4.8 block. right now i just need power and good mileage. i already know that the 6.0 doesn't get great mileage, my grandpa's truck never gets better than 16 on the highway. even my 350 could pull that kind of mileage, not as much power but still. the 4.8 gets 18-22 mpg on the highway. but if anyone has any more suggestions keep them coming, i really do appreciate all the impute and advice, since i still haven't made any set decisions, if anyone has a suggestion on another engine to use you may be able to change my mind.

i got my aeroforce gauge yesterday and i was using the MPG function... my truck a 5.3, cam, headers, ORY, and a nelson tune, i was gettin roughly 20-25 mpg depending on speed, wind, how flat the road was... i could hold a steady 23 mpg... i dont know what kind of milage you could get out of a 4.8... but thats something to think about

the truck my grandpa has is a 2002 1500HD with the 6.0 4l80e and 4.10 gears. that is why it gets no more than 16 highway, my truck also has 4.10 gears so i really don't want that engine just to get the same mileage. also it is alot cheaper to get a 350 and install, plus i can get 17 maybe 18 with the vortec heads. but thanks for the info, maybe a truck that isn't stock will get better. please keep the info coming i really do appreciate everyones input it does help.

You also have to realize, that our OBS trucks are much lighter than the newer style trucks. And that in its' self will help with fuel economy.

You'll be really lucky to get 17 to 18 mpg with the 350 and vortec heads with the 4.10 gears. I've ran that setup before my LS1 and it ate the gas. Without the 4.10's and a good tune, bored-descreened MAF, Helix spacer, headers and exhaust got me 20-21 MPG. When I installed my 4.10's and cam it went to 14 MPG.

my 350 before i toasted some internal parts i was getting 17mpg driveing 75mph. That is with a stock 350 exhaust trottle body spacer. so i should be able to get 18-19 if i had a vortec truck. i know that the 4.8 would get 22 but i just don't know if the cost of the swap is worth it, when theres so much more to the swap and alot can go wrong. i already know that it will cost me $1,075 for the tune and wiring harness. also motor and mounts will bring it to another 1,000. that brings my total to $2,075 then these all the new hoses and fuel lines. also a/c relocation, which is $640. also i will need a new fuel pump which i found out is over $300. So this could run me $3,500 once done. Then i would have to rebuild my tranny at least i think i would.

If i had the money it wouldn't be a problem i would just do the swap no questions asked, but when i can have a new motor for less money that is the clear choice.

also to add to it i hit a dear and that is how the engine over heated, also that too care of the bumper, grill, a/c condensor, radiator, and all the lights. it also damaged the radiator core support. which all this will run me about $800 with the best prices i could find.

if anyone can help so this wouldn't be so expensive the would be great but as far as i can tell it won't be cheap.
