How much boost can a 5.3 handle

Anyone know how much boost a bone stock 5.3 can handle. Also Ive heard all you need to do is change to some nice forged pistons and the bottom end will hold up pretty well, anyone know if this is true. If I change the pistons I was looking to run 12 psi, if I leave it stock I was hoping for 8 maybe 10. Id like to try and stay away from changing the whole rotating assembly just for moneys sake.

i wouldnt go over 10 psi IMO. 10psi will get you about 125-140 more hp. the crank will hold like 400-500 hp i think. but heads probably wont hold up to the pressure.

    Thumbs up

You can run more than 10psi, no sweat. It's all in the tune.

Stock cranks are good for FAR more than 500hp.

OK sorry, but I thought I heard one of the guys say the crank is good for 500hp. And i thought he was refering to a '' stock" engine. If your gonna tune it bro than yeah. but youll need Injectors, fule managment, fuel pump ect... and if you have say 15-20 psi. yeah the motor Might be able to take the abuse with upgrades. but i dont think the tranny would for an extended period of time. so ther goes another $2grand on a built tranny along with the $5grand turbo kit. IMO agian i wouldnt go over 10 psi on a "stock" setup. because your on a budget.

besides 6 psi will get you 325 whp. so 10 should be in the 350-400 range. if your at 20 psi.... who knows. 500-600whp depending on other mods. see how long 600whp will last on a stock tranny.
If it were my truck. id stay on the safe side of the limits. especially if i didnt want to spend a butt load.

id say you could def run 12 psi no problem ,i think jj ran 15 for 55k or so allen told me on stock lower end and tune.i run 15 all day and beat the snot out of mine .although for tranny reasons lol i did just reduce to 10 psi, till i get my built tranny back in.run meth get the right tune make sure youre a/f is on the money ,run soome 93 octane ,,and if its worth all that do it.if not run SAFE at 7-9 psi and wonder all day what else you can spend money on ,innstead of changing the pulley.these cranks have been proven too hold 600 hp all day. youlle get THE BUG if you keep reading this forum.lol my 2 cents

10psi is fine, just be sure to get a wideband and datalogging in the truck.

15psi is ok too, it's just on the edge. If you're going to run this much, keep the a/f ratio on the rich side, about 10.5:1

I've heard stock cranks are good up to around 900hp....I think you're safe there.

Haha thanks everyone, The reason my budget is small is because im working on a t56 swap so im not worried about the pos 4l60 i already blew that thing up. Im running a whipple supercharger intercooled with no whipple electronics. And my truck is a flex fuel model so it already has i believe 42lb injectors and the fuel pressure is around 64psi i checked it with a fuel pressure gauge when i installed the charger, when my tranny swap is done i will have Allen tune everything. O yeah im also running a meth injection. So everyone here thinks i should be able to handle a nicely tuned 12 psi no problem on a bone stock lower end??
