Thread: water pump question

    Could someone tell me how to route the heater hoses ? On the old 4.3 pump there was only one heater hose outlet. That one went to the heater core and the other one went back to the radiator . Now I have two heater hose outlets on this water pump , which I have jumped to each other at this time . Thanks for advice.

    I had both of the fittings at the water pump run to the heater hoses at the firewall. Depending which radiator you have that would be the best way. My heater worked great doing it that way. My late model radiator has a return point for the heater hose if needed. I blocked it off instead since it was working fine the other way.

    LS1CHEYENNE, Red is right .... the pair on the motor would work best. The thermostat has an internal bypass that lets the hot water flow into the heater core and back into the pump quicker than it would running back to the radiator. The rearward connection is your "HOT" water out and the front one is the "RETURN" back to the water pump. Just block off the one on the radiator. Or better yet you could use it for the vent line return ( steam line, ect .. )off the front of the heads if you don't have that taken care of already.

    Thanks for the response , gentlemen . Doc , I see that you notched your frame . I opted for the A/C setup from S & P . It looks nice but I've yet to install it . Got my truck started yesterday and drove it to work . IT HAULS ASS!! Now I need to at least get a Silverado cluster because I buried that 85 mph speedo in the bat of an eye . I was wondering about the vent return line . Are you talking about the one that goes to the throttle body ? I was told that I could plug that one off because , living the south ,(where it feels like summer already ) it's unnecessary . Is this true ? Thanks again and I'll post some pictures in the next week or so .

    LS1CHEYENNE, the vapor ( steam ) lines are there to releive any build up of air in the tops of the cylinder heads. I believe that is their purpose. The passenger line runs to the d-side head then they both run into the throttle body and into the radiator ( on my 04 this is the stock configuration ). From what I've read and heard you can bypass the throttle body connection but not unhook the lines and plug them off all together.

    Maybe if someone else can confirm this just to be sure.

    Don't block the steam lines off or you will never get all the air out of the top of the engine. Hot water makes steam eventually and it seeks out the highest point in the engine and will stay there if the water flow isn't forcing it out. Eventually you would have nothing but air up high in the engine block and overheating will occur. I tried blocking mine off and heat was an issue due to that.

    I think he's talking about the vent line on the passenger side of the throttle body. That line can be plugged, it won't affect the steam lines right? I've seen that line plugged on alot of cars around the Houston area. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

    That steam lines source comes from the driver side of the TB and is connected to the cylinder head steam line. What most people do is the "FREE" hp mod and run the hose directly from the head steam port line and vent it to the radiator so as to bypass the TB and keep from heating the air that is going through the TB. Yes, you can block off the line if you are bypassing the TB.

    guys I dont have a port on my radiator can I get a T connection with the smaller hose and jus tport this into my heater core lines? That is my plan...
    1968 Chevy SWB Fleet. 2002 5.3 all stock (for now ) Nelson Tune 4l60e w/TB converter.
    ok not stock anymore...13.3 at 101
    Now with front mount turbo... new times soon

    That should work. I tapped the water pump casting where the truck outlet would have been and put a pipe fitting there.
