    Mysterious red hose

I know without pictures, (i'll post them when i get a chance to actually take some) its hard to understand what i'm trying to explain, but there is about a 3/4 inch hose running down along my frame on my 06 2500hd from the gas tank.

it almost looks like is a garden hose, and its connected to i guess some type of sending unit that is on the back of the gas tank. I looked at a friends 2500 with the 6.0 and he has the same electrical unit, however it looks like the line he has is factory, and his runs up the passenger side of the tank, plus it looks like a steel line, as where mine comes around and runs along the driver side. Also this hose is hooked up with normal everyday hose clamps.

my first question is, what is this electronic device on the top back side of the gas tank, and I guess my second question is, what would be the reasoning for whoever owned the truck before me to re-route this line, and use this "garden hose" type line? I have not investigated any further underneath the truck just yet, but I figured i wanted to get a head start to see if anyone would know what i'm talking about.

btw, i've got the the 6.0l as well.

I"m going to look further into it tonight, but if anyone could give me any insight i would appreciate it.

    thanks.

That my friend would be the EVAP canister and assembly. I know that on my truck it's a black hose.

I would replace the hose with a fuel line hose. The black plastic fuel line hose is made of certain materials that do not let the gasoline or gasoline vapors to erode the lining of the hose.

sounds good enough for me. The line runs all the way up to the the driver side of the tranny, then plugs into this little guy.

How does the factory hose get a hole in it? Rusted through, the truck is an 06 for crying out loud, but as long as its doing the job, i guess its fine with me.

You might be fine with it now, but when the gasoline corrodes it and you start sprayin gas out when going 70 down the freeway, ill be there to say "i told ya so"

I certainly do not want that to happen. I"ll get to it with in the next week or so. Kinda irritates me that they would "rig" it up like that. What can you do but fix it right tho.

if it's part of the evap system, it's mostly vapor in there...gas won't "spray", but for the 1.39 a foot fuel line costs, it's worth replacing for peace of mind.
blown transmissions are about as useful as 97% of the guys on this forum

do not worry, it is a common evap problem, the GM bulletin moves the vent solenoid from the side of the tank, to the top part of the transmission. they moved the vent location so it has less chance of getting blocked up. if you want to change it out, just get black 5/8" heater hose.
