leave the belt on, get a wrench or crescent that fits it, hit the handle of the wrench with a hammer.

    Nope, easy to do.

Just strap wrench and BIG cresent wrench. I think its 1 1/2" nut.
Remove shroud, Remove belt. Grab water pulley with strap wrench and
    unscrew fan nut.

My belt wouldnt hold it. $10 strap wrench knocked it right out.

My belt didnt hold it. I believe the nut size is 26mm. I used a big cresent wrench and then a chain wrench to hold the water pump pulley.

Yes, I have never heard of nor have I ever had a belt hold strong enough to be able to spin off the fan clutch.
Like what was already said, don't slip, you will probably break something that you will need. Much less your hands, but hell, who are we kidding? We all pretty much have the same crappy looking hands that have been really messed up from time to time. I know that is how my hands look. And I look about 7-10 years older becouse of welding and working with my dad on some diesel trucks when I was younger. I guess that would also explain the constant back pain that I have.

Yeah--getting a strap wrench is the best way. If not, don;t even try to put tension on the belt to try and get it to hold the pulley--you will potentially stretch out the belt. Either use the special wrench, or try to told the W/P pulley down with a strap/chain etc. About an hour before, spray come bolt penetrant on the nut. One good blow by a good sized hammer should break it loose.

Smacking it properly takes the place of hoping the belt will hold in many cases yet that doesn't always work. Sometimes you can put a ratchet on the tensioner with a 15mm socket and REVERSE the pull to hold the belt TIGHTER to help out.

    I use the Kent-Moore tools....LOL.

Aftermarket tool companies make sets for these fans (and others) too if you'll be doing more than one. There is even an air hammer bit with the wrench on the end you can use without having to hold the water pump pulley.
