seem like you know all there is... maybe some cylinder heads, depends on
what camshaft. why the swap? youve already done the performance detail?

i was actually thinking about swapping my 5.3 to an ls1 because of the mileage and i think i just blew a head gasket...but i was wondering this same question...do i need a new harness, tranny (because of the power upgrades in the ls1 like an ls1 hotcam) from a 4l60e? maybe?...anything...i guess my question and Red's question is it a direct bolt up and plug and play with the ls1? cause i wasnt guessing it was

trans will bolt right up, the block from your 5.3, 4.8 is almost identical to a 5.7. your harness will work, your clutch fan will work, intake manifold, oil pan/pickup tube/windage tray, valve covers, computer, alternator, gaskets, rear cover, timing chain cover... pretty much everything. what you need to do is just buy an LS1 Longblock and you will have everything youll need. make sure you get a new crank bolt and water pump gaskets.

just incase, you dont have to replace this. timing cover gskt - 12574294
replace these for sure H20 pump gskts - 12588372
just incase crank seal - 12585673
replace this balancer bolt - 12557840
and another just incase valve cover gskt - 12560696 x2

if you have anymore questions feel free to pm me as ive done the 4.8 to LS1 swap... it was a little tiring but fun and it is WELL worth it

here is are some more things i found in my thread that i started on PT.Net after i did the swap, some of these i might have alreay mentioned but ill throw the whole list up anyways.

these parts are all interchangble between ALL of the LS motors
-air intake setup, and throttle body
-dipstick tube (i broke mine so it might be good to have one handy just incase)
-intake manifold, fuel rail, injectors, coils yada yada
    -wiring harness
-all the ac stuff (there was one bolt we ended up not using for the bracket that bolts onto the block becasue there was no bolt whole on the LS1 block for it)
-oil pan, windage tray, pickup tube
-knock sensors and that plate that covers the valley
-crank sensor on the side of the block, starter
-water pump (gaskets are reuseable but recommend buying 2 new ones, there not that much)
    -motor mounts
    -exhaust manifolds & gaskets
    -valve covers
    -timing chain cover
-all gaskets are reuseable except head gaskets, shouldnt have to deal with those anyways though
-flex plate and back motor cover
    -clutch fan

if there is anything that i missed feel free to add if you know

You can use the 4.8L/5.3L block and have it bored out to a 5.7L Ls1..There has been alot of people with some good success doing that...

ya an iron block LS1... youll have more work into that than just going to a junk yard and getting a LS1 but might save you more money depending on how much you spend on internals

also depends on how much down time you can afford for your truck... good bit of machine work involved

I'd sell off the 4.8 and pick up a low mileage 6.0L. Like they say, there's no replacement for displacement. Well maybe forced induction. The 6.0 will give you more power than you'll know what to do with for a while and then it will be time to start doing mods.

SWEET! thank you everyone for all of your feedback I love the idea i just have to put it in the works now! thanks!
But one more question...why is the 5.3 rated at a higher HP than the LS1 with the bigger displacement? it said 320 for the 5.3 and 310 for the LS1...
