    Abbreviations & Terminology

    Below is a list of terms & abbreviations common to everything vehicle related (if you need a course on chat room lingo & abbreviations, Google it!). This will be a continuous work-in-progress so please feel free to post up your ideas, suggestions, and corrections. In an effort to keep the thread as clutter-free as possible, posts will be read, items will be added to the list, and non-pertinent threads will then be deleted.

    Special Request: If you have a good link to a site or web page discussing some of the ins and outs of any of the items or topics below, please post them and I'll incorporate them in the list. Thanks ahead of time for everyone's help!

    GENERAL:

    2WD - Two Wheel Drive
    4WD - Four Wheel Drive
    AWD - All Wheel Drive
    CCLB - Crew Cab Long Bed
    CCSB - Crew Cab Short Bed
    DD - Daily Driver
    ECLB - Extended Cab Long Bed

    A/F - Air Fuel Ratio
    BBC - Big Block Chevy engine
    BBDC - Before Bottom Dead Center
    BDC - Bottom Dead Center
    BTDC - Before Top Dead Center
    CCLB - Crew Cab Long Bed Truck
    CI - Cubic Inches
    CR - Compression Ratio
    DBC - Drive By Cable
    DBW - Drive By Wire
    ECM - Engine Control Module
    EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation
    EGT - Exhaust Gas Temperature
    FMU - Fuel Management Unit
    FPR - Fuel Pressure Regulator

    Gen lll - Generation 3 GM smallblock V8 engine (introduced 1997)
    Hemi - A Hemi engine has a hemispherical shaped cylinder-head combustion chamber, like a ball cut in half
    HP - Horsepower
    IAC - Idle Air Control
    IC - Ignition Control Circuit
    LQ4 - The Vortec 6000, or LQ4, is a V8 truck engine. It is a bored version of the Vortec 5300. Displacement is 6.0 L (364 in&#179 from 101.6 mm bore and 92 mm stroke. It is an iron/aluminum (note that 2000 model year engines had cast iron heads) design and produces 300-325 hp (224-242 kW) and 360-370 ft·lb (488-502 N·m). LQ4s are built in Romulus, Michigan and Silao, Mexico.
    LQ9 - The Vortec HO 6000 or VortecMAX, technically the LQ9, is a special high-output version of the Vortec 6000 V8 truck engine originally designed for Cadillac. This engine was introduced in other truck lines as VortecMAX for 2006. It features high-compression (10:1) flat-top pistons for an extra 10 hp (7.5 kW) and 10 ft·lbf (14 N·m), bringing output to 345 hp (257 kW) and 380 ft·lb (515 N·m). LQ9s are built only in Romulus, Michigan.
    LS1 - Generation 3 GM smallblock V8 engine (introduced 1997)
    LS2 - Generation 4 GM smallblock V8 engine (introduced 2005)
    LS6 - Generation 3 GM smallblock V8 found in Corvette Z06 (introduced 2001)
    LSA - Lobe Seperation Angle (camshaft)
    MAP - Manifold Absolute Pressure (sensor)
    N/A - Naturally Aspirated (all-motor)
    PCM - Powertrain Control Module (your vehicles engine/tranny computer)
    PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation (emissions system)
    P&P - Ported And Polished
    RPM - Revolutions Per Minute (engine speed)
    RWD - Rear Wheel Drive
    RWHP - Rear Wheel Horsepower
    RWTQ - Rear Wheel Torque
    TB - Throttle Body
    TDC - Top Dead Center
    TPS - Throttle Postion Sensor
    TQ - Torque
    VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor
    WB O2 - Wide Band Oxygen Sensor
    SCR - static compression ratio
    DCR - dynamic compression ratio

    CAMSHAFT:

    IVO - intake valve opening
    IVC - intake valve closing
    EVO - exhaust valve opening
    EVC - exhaust valve closing
    LCA -lobe center angle
    ICL - intake centerline
    ID - intake duration
    ED - exhaust duration
    VE - valve event

    TRANSMISSION:

    ATF - Automatic Transmission Fluid
    FLT - Finish Line Transmissions
    TC - Torque Converter (also less accurately referred to as a Stall Converter)
    TB TC - Trailblazer SS Torque Converter
    TM - Torque Management

    INTAKE & EXHAUST:

    CAI - Cold Air Intake
    Cats - Catalytic Converters
    FIPK - Fuel Injection Performance Kit
    HFC - High Flow Cats
    IAT - Intake Air Temperature
    LT's - Long Tube Headers
    MAF - Mass Air Flow sensor (measures amount of air entering intake)
    O2 - Oxygen Sensor
    ORY - Off Road Y-pipe
    ST's - Short Tube Headers

    FORCED INDUCTION & NITROUS:

    BOV - Blow Off Valve
    FI - Forced Induction
    FIPK - Forced injection Performance Kit
    FMIC - Front Mounted Intercooler
    N20 - Nitrous Oxide
    NOS - Nitrous Oxide Systems (brand name)
    SC - Super Charger - A crank-driven air/fuel-mixture compressor, also called a blower. It increases atmospheric pressure in the engine to produce more horsepower.
    Turbo - An exhaust-driven intake air compressor.
    TT - Twin Turbo

    TUNING:

    HPP - Hypertech Power Programmer
    KR - Knock Retard
    PE - Power Enrichment (tuning)
    SES - Service Engine Soon lamp (on dash)
    LTFT or LTRIM - LongTerm Fuel Trim (tuning)
    STFT or STRIM - Short Term Fuel Trim (tuning)

    TRACK:

    1/8 Mile - Pertaining to an 1/8th drag strip or the 1/8th mile portion of a 1/4 mile drag strip.
    1/4 Mile - Pertaining to a 1/4 mile drag strip.
    60' - Sixty-foot time - The time it takes a vehicle to cover the first 60 feet of the racetrack. It is the most accurate measure of the launch from the starting line and in most cases determines how quick the rest of the run will be.
    Burnout - Spinning the tires in water to heat and clean them prior to a run for better traction.
    Holeshot - When a driver reacts quicker to the Christmas Tree to win a race against an opponent with a quicker E/T.
    Interval Timers - Part of a secondary timing system that records elapsed times, primarily for the racers’ benefit, at 60, 330, 660, and 1,000 feet.
    Tree - Also called a Christmas Tree, it is the electronic starting device between the lanes on the starting line. It displays a calibrated-light countdown for each driver.
    Tree (Sportsman Tree) - Used for bracket and handicap racing, consists of each yellow lighting 0.5 seconds after the one above it. The green comes on 0.5 seconds after the last yellow is lit. If the race is a handicap race each side of the tree will have its own timing.
    Tree (Pro or Full Tree) - Used in Competition, Super Stock, and Stock, for which a handicap starting system is used to equalize competition. The three amber bulbs on the Christmas Tree flash consecutively five-tenths of a second apart, followed five-tenths later by the green starting light. A perfect reaction time on a full Tree is .500.
    DR's - Drag Radials
    E/T - Elapsed Time or the time it takes a vehicle to travel from the starting line to the finish line.
    Heads-Up - Refers to a race in which 2 competitors
    Foul Start - Indicated by a red light on the Christmas Tree when a car has left the starting line before the green light, or starting signal.
    R/T - Reaction Time - The time it takes a driver to react to the green starting light on the Christmas Tree, measured in thousandths of a second. The reaction-time counter begins when the last amber light flashes on the Tree and stops when the vehicle clears the stage beam.
    Stage (Pre) - To position the front wheels about seven inches behind the starting line so the small yellow lights atop that driver’s side of the Christmas Tree are glowing. The next step is to stage and be ready to race.
    Stage - To position the front wheels right on the starting line so the small yellow lights below the pre-stage lights are glowing. Once both drivers are staged, the calibrated countdown (see Christmas Tree) may begin.
    Stage (Deep) - To roll a few inches farther into the beams after staging, which causes the pre-stage lights to go out. In that position, a driver is closer to the finish line but dangerously close to a foul start.
    Traps or Speed Traps - The final 66 feet to the finish line where speed is recorded.
    Weight Transfer - Pertains to vehicles with traction issues. The goal for RWD vehicles, is that they are set up to provide a desired weight transfer to the rear wheels. Upon acceleration, the front wheels lift and the weight shifts to the rear wheels, which makes them less likely to spin.

    What about LQ9? IAT? Collectors? CR? CC? Catback? Dual chamber muffler? Bellhousing? Crossmember? Valve body? Sun shell? FLEXPLATE? Flywheel? Accumulator? LSD? 10, 12, 14 bolt rear? 9" rear? Shims? Crush sleeve? U-joint? Upper and lower control arms? Pitman arm? Ball joint? Spider gears? Mini spool? Cal-tracs? Long bars? C-notch? Flip kit? Shackles? I could go on and on...but these are a few that popped in my head while reading this...

    You forgot ricer (Ricer: from the latin word Ricarius meaning to suck at everything you attempt)

    A person who makes unecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster. The most common modifications are (but not limited to):

    - Huge exhaust that serves no purpose but to make the car louder
    - Large spoiler on the back that looks like something Boeing made for the 747
    99RCSB Broke because I wasted thousands and thousands of dollars on my truck.

    Excuse my stupidity here but when talking about turbos, no brands in mind, what does a/r mean? Thanks guys.

    I didn't read it all...but obs = 88-98 nbs = 99-07 nnbs= 08-current
    blown transmissions are about as useful as 97% of the guys on this forum
