I just installed a set of Richmond 4.10's with an Eaton Posi and it was set up to spec. with a good pattern. At random times I get a low high pitch whine, it almost has a slight ring to it, does anyone else have this problem?

I heard that the richmond gears do make whining noises, if you really don't like the noise ( i know i hate it, my Z had it) go with some Yukon gears or GM gears. My gears drove me crazy!!! in that car.

btw, how do the new gears feel?

I think I am just about right, I can pull the hills in 6th and it takes off a lot better, I only have 40 miles on them so I haven't cranked on it yet. I used my HPP3 to correct for my speedo error and that worked fine, and our last conversation I was telling you about a SES light which was a code for multiple misfire and it hasn't shown its face in a while. Do you think I would be wasteing my money to have a competent shop look at my gear setup and do you think they could get the whine out? Electric fans are next.

I think you'd have to find a very good shop to eliminate the noise. I would just hate to see you go somewhere and they say they find something, then you still have the noise. A lot of the richmond gears make noise, so i guess it's a toss up on going to a shop.

    good luck,

Hey Ron, any luck on your gear whine?

I just chatted with others and they have richmond gears, and the whine.

I haven't messed with them anymore, When I installed the ring gear on my carrier It slid on with a little slop, I measured my stock gear and it measured about .004 to .005 smaller I.D. then the Richmonds. I think this may be where the noise is comming from. As I said it is not to loud and not real consistant, it sounds more like some sort of harmonics rather than an improper mesh of gears. Richmond said to take them back where I got them and have them return them but I got them off of ebay. They where new but I wondered if someone already knew about the slightly larger I.D..
