Pinion preload?

Anybody know the correct way to do this. When y'all change diff and or gears removing rear axle housing completely seems easier to me. Any thought

The last two I have done, I had the housing out form under the truck and it was much easier. I would also assume that if you had access to a lift, then leaving it in the truck would also be easy.
