    Thumbs down 4l80e 1st gear

Ok so I've got a 99 2500 4x4 ec lb. Its got 373 gears the 4l80e trans and 285 70 16 tires. In the last two weeks I installed ls2 heads, comp 222 224 112 cam, 2800 stall, long tubes, 8.1 injectors and a cold air intake. Its still pretty much the stock tune accept with the 8.1 injector values. Ill tune it on the dyno this weekend. The problem is that I can see that the truck is still going be kind of a mutt off the line because first gear is too effin high in this tranny! I mean at like 5200rpm in first gear in showing about 60 on the speedo and I'm going even faster than that because speedo is not calibrated for the 285s!#! Not to mention that after the tune and with this cam my shift points will be more like 6200 or more. Ill be shifting out of first gear at like 70mph!!! What a joke.... if I run any smaller tire the truck looks stupid cause its so long. I mean it seems like I would need 544 gears to shift into second around 35 or so witch is what I want it to do. Do they even make gears that high for the front diffs of these trucks? What would I be tacking in od at 70? Could I get a gear vendors overdrive and somehow use it to cut first gear in half? What do you folks do about this atrocious first gear ratio? I think a 60e has like a 3.08 ratios where the 80e has a 2.40 or so. Crazy!

I'm a big fan of the 4l80 first gear. It's very nice that it pulls that long. I'd take that over my 60e any time.

A good convertor will really wake that transmission up. The stock 80e converter is a little loose but I'd sure look into a 3200+ convertor so the engine can come up on the RPMs and let the power really transfer to the ground. I run a 3500 Vig with my 80e and I've never had a vehicle so fun to drive!

Its already got a 2800 stall from patc. It seemed like a huge improvement over stock verter. You really think not having a 3200 stall is a bigger issue than being geared to go 70mph in 1st? I wouldnt think so. Where does one buy 4.88 gears for the front diff of a 99 2500?

The fact that it pulls to 70 is bad ass.

Its not bad ass. Its slow ass. Being geared that tall takes away all the mechanical leverage needed to get the truck moving quickly. If you had a 5sp manual would you start out in third just so you could eventually accelerate to 70mph without changing gears cause its bad ass? If so you would smoke the clutch in a few days and loose any and every race you got into if your competition thinks its cool to use mechanical leverage to accelerate the vehicle. Not to mention pulling a trailer. But hey to each his own. You got some 4.88 gears you want to trade me?
