Are you referring to the pinion seal? This needs to be done by someone that deals with setting up gears. Its important that the pinion preload remains the same so you dont have problems. The New pinion nut can be over tightened and as a result you can burn up the bearings due to wrong preload.

More to it then taking the nut off and replacing the seal...

i figured it was more then just a snap in procedure. I thought it was my pan cover that was leaking but its dripping down the axle housing from twhere the driveshaft yoke enters it.

yeah, it has to be done right. did you just do a gear swap or something?(if you did is there any noise?) if you just recently did a swap then i say you might have set up the pinion preload wrong or if its an old setup then the seal could be bad but you gotta make sure the preload is right when you swap the seal. get with someone who is very knowledgeable on gear swaps and rear ends before you tear into anything here imo

the fill plug is right around that area too....it's not coming from there correct?

But ya...if it IS the pinion seal....take it to a shop, you DO NOT want to mess with that...too many specialty tools required.

You could do it, count the threads exposed, mark the pinion and the nut with a dash on one side. But yes there still is a chance to F up the preload.
