71 chevy truck 5.3 need info on fuel pump, etc
Hello, Put a 5.3 in my 71. It is a 2001 motor. I put a custom stainless fuel tank in the back. Planned on a external pump. I thought of inside the tank, but decided on the outside. Question #1 Can I eliminate the vapor line off the engine? #2 Is there a stock pump I can use from the wrecking yard to mount on the outside of the tank? #3 What pressure do i need? What aftermarket pump would be the best on a tight budget? Thanks for reading my post. Alan

I would recommend the MSD pump. Thats what I plan on using in my 64. It retails at summit for $105. As far as pressure I would use a corvette regulator/filter with built in return, I believe from an 07 vette (I think its about $75 at the dealership). And the vapor line your referring to you mean the EVAP? You can delete that. Not necessary. The fuel rails you have should have a return line on them already? If you can swap them for a set of non return ones I would do that and use the vette reg/filter I was referring to, that way you can save some fuel line and mount it toward the rear. I have a set if you are interested. Otherwise just use the ones you have with an aftermarket inline regulator such as Professional Products.

I looked at the msd pump and saw it was rated at 40 psi. From what I have read, the 5.3 needs about 55-63 psi. I have no idea if this matters much. I bought today a bosch 72 psi, 39 gph. I do not know if 39 gph is enough. I looked on the web for hours with no luck. Can I remove the vapor line and how does that effect things? I live in Lodi, Ca not far from you. Thanks, Alan

Is it that low of pressure? Interesting. Good lookin out. How much was that bosche pump that sounds like it will work just fine to me if your not goin boosted or crazy high hp. Ya the vapor line I just cut and capped it. Its just one of those smog things, I think like the old charcoal cannister ya know? Oh ya Lodi is just south 15 minutes. If your interested in those fuel rails pm me.

50-ish is for stock idle, up to 65 for WOT.
Look into a Walbro 255 or something similar. Bosch makes one too, but can't remember the #.
Gone, but not forgotten!

the pump I bought makes 72.5 psi at 39 gph. Paid $169 & tax. Made in Czech republic. Bosch is nice stuff. I bought it in Stockton at Global Auto parts, any part store that deals in euro car parts. I want to run the return line as i bought all the stuff. I am going stainless. Would like to put the 2nd filter mid way in the frame. Need to figure fittings and a filter. I like the inline type like the newer gm trucks. I would like a common filter ,so down the road they will still make it. My pump sits out of the tank in the rear between the new tank and bumper. I am making a bracket / heat sink to help cool the pump. Billet aluminum with cooling fins. All for now, Alan

Sounds like you got the pump figured out. If you are using the 2001 intake, just use the stock fuel rails, and regulator, it will control the pressure properly. No need for the Corvette filter with that intake. You might want to fire that pump up and see how loud it is. Good call on the heat sink, the in-tank pumps use the fuel around them to keep them cool.
Dunno if there are more options out there now, but I used some AN-quick connect adapters when I put my fuel system together. They were ~$35+ shipping, and it let me quick connect to the intake, and use standard AN/JIC fittings the rest of the way.. Very clean, very reliable, no worries.
As for the mounting location, are you sure it's a relatively protected area? Sounds like you are putting right near the rear bumper.. I'd be wary of that..

Oh, and for the vapor line, yes you can cap it off, when you get your PCM flashed have them cal out all of the EVAP codes so you don't keep getting Check engine lights from it.
