    Fuel Delivery Setup... LQ4 swap

ok i am swapping a 6.0l vortec into my 66 chevrolet truck. i have been doing alot of studying and i just wanted to check with some experts before i started ordering and gathering parts for my fuel system. My plan is to swap in a tank from a chevy truck, blazer, etc... that had tbi as they are plentiful around here. then replace the fuel pump thats in it with a walbro in tank 255lph fuel pump. one thing im unsure about is the fuel pressure regulator. my lq4 has the return line from the engine. does that mean the regulator is on the fuel rail and i dont need to add one? i read somewhere about the 99 corvette fuel filter that has the regulator built in but thats just for the returnless setups right? if the regulator is on the rail then i plan to use a fuel filter from a 2001 chevrolet 1500hd which is what my engine and tranny came from. if i am thinking wrong about any of this please correct me.
thanks in advance for any help yall can provide,
    John

The LQ4 you mentioned is a return system and the regulator is in the rail. You'll have to run both lines this way. If you wanna run just the one line you'll have to go returnless. Those Vette filters are expensive too (for a maintenance item).

yeah, but how often do you have to change them, every 50k? $40 is cheap for 50k miles and its cheap for a fuel pressure regulator.

Holy crap....didn't know you could get one that cheap. What system do you recommend for him then? I know you Vette intake guys run the returnless set up a lot but is it needed or is it to save money on fittings and connections?

Its just what our system comes with usually and its easier to not reinvent the wheel. Use what you have is what I say.

Its just not to save money. A lot of the systems are already returnless. The returnless fuel system is simple in design as well. I payed about $33.00 for the Vette filter/regulator. There are a few different venders making these filters now, Wix, Purolator, Delco, Advance, etc. Makes me wonder...if the newer Vettes are still using these or not?

The newer Vettes do not have a traditional fuel filter and neither does harldy anything else these days. They have a primary and secondary FPR in the tank(s).

There are some early 2000's cars and trucks made for flex fuel that also use the regulator/filter (three pipe connections) filter other than the Vette. Wonder if those would work for a returnless system too?

Trucks (except for some L59 Z engines) went returnless in 2004 right? The difference is the regulator is in the pump module instead of the filter ('cause they don't even have a filter) on the 04+ trucks. I think I would use what I had too (like Greg suggested) I just wanted to know if there was advantage one versus the other.

The Vette filters are like $75-80 retail from the dealer but the prices quoted above are great.

    what would it take?

so what would it take as far as modifications to the fuel rail to convert to a returnless setup? does that mean i would only have to run one line to the rail and not two? also will the rest of my setup be satisfactory (tank, pump, etc)?
    thanks,
    John

    returnless

i capped my return line on the rail with a quick disconnect fitting and added a mechanical fuel pressure gauge to it.
1985 Silverado LQ4/4l80e Turbonetics Single Turbo, 60lbs injectors, air to water intercooler, PST driveshaft, ARP head & rod fasteners, Custom cam, HP Tuners, PLX wideband, DUAL tanks still work!
