Stock sending unit. Does your 86 have a mechanical fuel pump? If so, get an inline Walbro unit if you're on a budget. A Bosch is a little better. If you want the best there is then look at an Aeromotive.

I want to use an in tank pump setup...I was told i could use an 88+ sending unit in the older tanks...If so...How does it all hook up?

Be sure they both have the same resistor values or the readings are going to be wrong.

why not just use a 1987 (same body style and accessories) tank, sending
unit and upgraded high pressure pump?
the sending unit will allow you to use the OE cluster and gauge.
the pump access will allow using an in-tank pump. plumb a return line
and your fuel problems are solved.
